  • Causal Models in the Social Sciences

    Neil W Henry•REVIEW•Contemporary Sociology A Journal…•1976

Causal models are formal theories stating the relationships between precisely defined variables, and have become an indispensable tool of the social scientist. This collection of articles is a course book on the causal modeling approach to theory construction and data analysis. H. M. Blalock, Jr. summarizes the then-current developments in causal model utilization in sociology, political science, economics, and other disciplines. This book provid…

  • A finite model of mobility

Neil W Henry, Robert Mcginnis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mathematical Sociology•1971•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 3

The Markov chains with stationary transition probabilities have not proved satisfactory as a model of human mobility. A modification of this simple model is the ‘duration specific’ chain incorporating the axiom of cumulative inertia: the longer a person has been in a state the less likely he is to leave it. Such a process is a Markov chain with a denumerably infinite number of states, specifying both location and duration of time in the location.…

IN their recent article Woelfel and Haller ( 1971 ) posed a theory for the attainment of education that is diagramatically presented in Figure 1. The variables are: X1: Academic performance X2: Measured mental ability X3: Educational aspirations X4: Occupational aspirations X5: Significant others' educational expectations X6: Significant others' occupational expectations X7: Father's occupational prestige level
