Risk for Mental Health Distress Among PreK‐12 Teachers During the Covid‐19 Pandemic
Throughout the COVID‐19 pandemic, teachers risked their physical and mental health to continue providing educational services to students. This study examined the prevalence of mental health distress and risk factors among a sample of teachers from the mid‐Atlantic United States. PreK‐12 educators ( N = 1295) completed online cross‐sectional quantitative surveys between October 2020 and January 2021. After obtaining descriptive statistics on rate…

Two-Wave Models for Latent Changes: How Well Can They Recover the Parameters of the Three-Wave Growth Curve Model
Latent Curve Detrending for Disaggregating Between-Person Effect and Within-Person Effect
Longitudinal data analysis is gaining attention from researchers because it enables us to examine both between- and within-person effects simultaneously. Traditionally, centering has been used with multilevel models to estimate these two effects. However, recent studies found that centering could not disaggregate the between-person and within-person effects when a time-varying predictor shows time trends. This article develops methods for disaggr…
Education, Social Engagement, and Cognitive Function: A Cross-Lagged Panel Analysis
Education in earlier life stage may exert a lifelong effect on cognitive function as well as an indirect effect via enhancing late-life cognitive reserve such as social engagement. The cross-lagged effect of social engagement on cognitive function is significant and vice versa. Future research may explore other cognitive reserves over the life course and its underlying mechanism to achieve healthy cognitive aging

Bias for Treatment Effect by Measurement Error in Pretest in Ancova Analysis
This paper investigated consequences of measurement error in the pretest on the estimate of the treatment effect in a pretest–posttest design with the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) model, focusing on both the direction and magnitude of its bias. Some prior studies have examined the magnitude of the bias due to measurement error and suggested ways to correct it. However, none of them clarified how the direction of bias is affected by measurement…
Exploring the Physiological and Psychological Effects of Digital Shinrin-Yoku and Its Characteristics as a Restorative Environment
This study investigated the physiological and psychological therapeutic effects of a digital Shinrin-yoku environment constructed indoors in an urban facility as well as the characteristics of the environment that contribute to restorativeness (restorative traits). We measured the fluctuations in the physical and mental states of 25 subjects by obtaining both before-after measurements and continuous measurements while exposed to a digital Shinrin…
Infant attention and maternal education are associated with childhood receptive vocabulary development
Receptive vocabulary development was examined in 313 children (151 girls; 78% White) as a function of infant attention and maternal education (66% of mothers held a college degree or higher). Attention was measured at 10 months using a dynamic puppet task and receptive vocabulary was measured at 3-, 4-, 6-, and 9 years of age using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. The best-fitting multilevel growth model was a quadratic model as a function of…
Integrating Large Datasets in Outcome Research: A Case Example
Existing datasets can be especially useful in counseling outcome research. Institutional or governmental resources such as electronic medical, educational, social services, and criminal justice records hold valuable information about our clients’ lives (e.g. systemic issues, barriers to treatment, advocacy needs). Unfortunately, these datasets often exist in silos so tracking an individual across multiple datasets is a complex challenge. In this …
Multilevel Analysis of Factors Associated with Left Behind Children in China
With the rapid development of urbanization in China, a growing number of rural workers migrate to urban cities for employment opportunities with leaving their children at home. These children are called left behind children (LBC) in China and their population has dramatically increased during the last 20 years. So far, many studies have examined what factors were associated with this increasing LBC populations. However, they were rarely guided by…
Multilevel analysis of BMI growth trajectories of US school children: Features and risk factors
Childhood obesity continues to be a major focus of public health efforts in the United States, where nearly 17% of children are obese. In this study, we focused on two significant features that characterize U.S. society-school mobility and a single-parent family structure-and how they relate to childhood obesity/overweight. Using a nationally representative sample from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten (ECLS-K) class of 1998, we…
The Influence of Parent and Parent–Adolescent Relationship Characteristics on Sexual Trajectories into Adulthood
Examining individual and school characteristics associated with child obesity using a multilevel growth model
Disasters and preventive measures in North Shan Xi(山西省) in China
Tests for linkage of multiple cohorts in an accelerated longitudinal design.
In accelerated longitudinal design, one samples multiple age cohorts and then collects longitudinal data on members of each cohort. The aim is to study age-outcome trajectories over a broad age span during a study of short duration. A threat to valid inference is the Age x Cohort interaction effect. S. W. Raudenbush and W. S. Chan (1993) developed a test for such interactions in the context of 2 cohorts by using a hierarchical model. The current …
