  • About and Beyond the `Underclass'

    Open Access•John Westergaard•ARTICLE•Sociology•1992•Cited by: 6•References: 9

The concern of this article is with the influence of fashion and social climate on social speculation. The `underclass' notion is a nice example of fashion. Its various versions are influential less because they fit facts than because they are tuned well with tempers of the times. It seems then a sign of sound sense that, while sociologists have taken the notion on board for assessment, most have not gone overboard with it. This point prompts som…

  • Scholarship, research and teaching

    John Westergaard•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•1991•Cited by: 6

It is now common in policy-making circles to argue that teaching in higher education can be sound without back-up from staff engagement in research; and, in particular, that the country cannot afford to widen student access substantially unless provision for research is uncoupled from provision for teaching, and limited to a small number of select institutions. The paper challenges proposals of this kind for institutional concentration of researc…

  • Looking Backwards and Forwards

    John Westergaard, R E Pahl et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•1989•Cited by: 3•References: 3

This special issue of the journal happens to coincide with publication of the University Grants Committee's subject review report on sociology (UGC 1989). The coincidence seems a happy one in one respect at least. It allows inclusion in the issue of a paper intended to summarise the report-a view of university sociology in the UK from the fund-allocating centre-and to set it in context. The paper has its limitations. Both authors were members of …

  • The Radicalisation of Science

    Open Access•Jock Young, Steven P R Rose et al.•BOOK•The Radicalisation of science•1976

The contemporary world projects a perplexing picture of political, social and economic upheaval. In these challenging times the conventional wisdoms of orthodox social thought whether it be sociology, economics or cultural studies become inadequate. This series focuses on this intellectual crisis, selecting authors whose work seeks to transcend the limitations of conventional discourse. Its tone is scholarly rather than polemical, in the belief t…

  • Capitalism without Classes

    John Westergaard, J H Westergaard•ARTICLE•New left review•1964

The years since the early 1950’s have echoed with the claim that the old class structure of capitalism is steadily dissolving. The labels attached to that new order of society which is believed to be emerging from the ruins of the old—the ‘welfare state’, the ‘affluent society’, the

Alan M G Little, Alan Little et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•1964•Cited by: 15

prominent in contemporary commentaries on the 'condition of England', and on the changing structures of highly industrialized societies. Empirical research has given little support to expectations that definite changes would be observable when rates of social mobility were compared over time. The theory that in the United States the 'closing of the frontier' and the consolidation of corporate capitalism must have reduced movement up and down the …
