  • The linguistic basis of narrative suspense: Narrative Suspense Depends on Potentially Inquiry-Terminating Questions

Open Access•Edgar Onea, Thomas Koppe et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Cognition•2026•References: 39

Suspense is an important aspect of cognitive-emotional narrative text comprehension. We adopt a text-centered, linguistic approach, investigating how the information structure of a narrative text as modeled by its erotetic structure instigates suspense. We report on two studies that reveal a strong correlation between the presence of what we term ‘potentially inquiry-terminating questions’ (PITQs) and the level of experienced suspense. PITQs are …

  • What Is Narrative Suspense? Evidence from Production Studies

Open Access•Kathrin Hirsch, Thomas Koppe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Theory•2025

Suspense is an important aesthetic feature of narrative media across different genres. Literary theory is concerned with elucidating the concept of suspense as applied to narrative literature. If literary theory wants to keep in touch with ordinary usage of the term ›suspense‹, then it must rely on an audience’s ability to judge scenes in narratives as to their suspensefulness. But how do we find out how someone understands the very concept of su…

  • The nearly missed account of narrative suspense

Open Access•Thomas Koppe, Tilmann Köppe et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers of Narrative Studies•2024

In this paper, we specify features of a narrative that are responsible for its suspensefulness. Taking Noël Carroll’s account of erotetic narrative as our point of departure, we argue that a narrative is experienced as suspenseful because it gives rise to so-called potentially inquiry terminating questions. Such questions suggest to readers that they are just about to get the information they are reading for. Due to this highly specific erotetic …

  • Formen des Ganzen

Open Access•Karin Kukkonen, Der Roman et al.•BOOK•Formen des Ganzen•2022

Vielfältige (Be-)Deutungen und vielgestaltige, komplexe Formen.

  • On the alethic and moral status of political storytelling

Niels Klenner, Thomas Koppe et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers of Narrative Studies•2021

The article reconstructs the theory of political storytelling as outlined by political strategist Mark McKinnon. Stories that conform to this theory feature a suspense structure, and as such they invoke hope and fear in recipients, thereby instilling pro- or contra-attitudes. This is potentially problematic in four respects: Political storytelling (1) can be used to induce attitude-change without a rational foundation, thereby infringing on the r…

  • Two approaches to defining internal, external, and zero-focalization

Open Access•Jan Stühring, Thomas Koppe et al.•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 8

The paper discusses two approaches to defining internal, external, and zero-focalization. According to the first approach, the three types of focalization are defined in terms of a relation of a character’s knowledge to the narrator’s report. We argue that the definitions based on this approach are seriously flawed. According to the second approach, whether a narrative is internally, externally or zero-focalized depends on how the information tha…

  • Sinuses and flotation: Does the aquatic ape theory hold water

    Open Access•Todd C Rae, Thomas Koppe•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2014

The idea that people went through an aquatic phase at some time in their evolutionary past is currently undergoing a popular resurgence (see Foley & Lahr ). This idea has even started to gain some traction in more learned circles; the late paleoanthropologist Phillip Tobias wrote in support of aspects of it in an edited e‐book and a conference on the topic held recently in London was endorsed by celebrities such as the television presenter Sir Da…

  • Holes in the head: Evolutionary interpretations of the paranasal sinuses in catarrhines

    Open Access•Todd C Rae, Thomas Koppe•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2004

Everyone who has ever experienced a head cold is familiar with the paranasal sinuses, the bony hollows above and beside the nasal cavity that contribute, sometimes painfully, to upper respiratory tract disorders. These internal cranial structures have a wide distribution among eutherian mammals and archosaurs. 1 , 2 Sinuses have languished somewhat in the shadow of their better known and more accessible morphological cousins (dentition, postcrani…

  • Clinal variation of maxillary sinus volume in Japanese macaques ( Macaca fuscata )

    Open Access•Todd C Rae, R A Hill et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2003

Macaques (genus Macaca ) are unique among cercopithecids in that they possess a maxillary sinus, and among anthropoids in that they demonstrate a relatively weak relationship between the size of this sinus and the cranium. To test the hypothesis that extrinsic factors may contribute to maxillary sinus size variation, a sample of 46 Japanese macaque ( M. fuscata ) crania from known localities were subjected to computed tomography (CT) imaging, and…

  • Ancestral loss of the maxillary sinus in Old World monkeys and independent acquisition in Macaca

    Open Access•Todd C Rae, Thomas Koppe et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2002•Cited by: 15•References: 13

Cercopithecoid monkeys are unique among primates in that all species (except macaques) lack a maxillary sinus, an unusual condition among eutherian mammals. Although this uncommon distribution of cranial pneumatization was noted previously, the phylogenetic ramifications have not been investigated fully. Recently, character state optimization analysis of computed tomography (CT) data from extant Old World monkeys suggested that the loss of the si…

Open Access•Thomas Koppe, Yoshihiro Inoué et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•1996

Computerized three-dimensional images derived from coronal CT scan series of 10 adult skulls from Macaca fuscata of both sexes served to evaluate the paranasal sinuses. The maxillary sinus was found as the only paranasal sinus of the Japanese macaque. The hemispherical or kidney shaped maxillary sinus was almost restricted to the body of the maxilla. The maxillary sinus volume amounted to 0.88cm3, with a bigger sinus in male than in female skulls…
