  • Just a Gigolo

    Matthew V Pruitt•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 40

Our knowledge of men who offer sexual services exclusively to women via the Internet and how they differ from male-for-male escorts is quite limited. Escort advertisements are likely to reflect differences in both the providers themselves and the targets of these ads. A content analysis of online ads posted by male-for-female and male-for-male escorts is conducted in order to compare these groups of sex workers with regard to demographics, person…

  • Escort Advertisements and Male Patronage of Prostitutes

    Matthew V Pruitt, Amy C Krull•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2010•Cited by: 17•References: 14

Sociologists have devoted limited attention to investigating reasons for male patronage of female prostitutes. To date this research has largely been comprised of non-representative samples of clients. We expand sociological inquiry of this question through a content analysis of the advertisements of 237 female Internet escorts who advertise on a large, national-in-scope (U.S.A.) website. Our findings largely complement those of previous studies …

  • Deviant Research

    Matthew V Pruitt•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 20

Some social scientists who study deviant groups assume that it is necessary to use deception in order to avoid the bias associated with the decision of some subjects to not participate in such studies. Selective non-participation can lead to low response rates and, thereby, adversely affect the representativeness of the sample. This study directly tests for a differential in response rates to data gathered from an e-mail request for information o…

  • Online Boys

    Matthew V Pruitt•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•2005•Cited by: 20•References: 13

The Internet has impacted social life in many ways, including providing a new means for prostitutes and customers to find each other. While male-for-male prostitution has existed for thousands of years, male Internet prostitution is a relatively new phenomenon. An analysis of 1,262 advertisements placed on a large, national (United States), Internet escort site is used to provide a description of the men involved in this form of prostitution and …

  • Size Matters

    Matthew V Pruitt•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2002•Cited by: 6•References: 4

This articles examines estimates of the size of the gay population that are provided in the Websites of pro- and anti-gay groups. There are marked differences in the estimates that are provided by these groups. While most pro-gay groups suggest that approximately ten percent of the population is gay, anti-gay groups argue that only 1-3 percent of the population is gay. While none of the pro-gay groups address the methodological problems associate…

  • Modeling Fear of Crime and Perceived Victimization Risk

    Open Access•James W Kanan, Matthew V Pruitt•ARTICLE•Sociological Inquiry•2002•Cited by: 36

The bulk of fear-of-crime research has been limited to one questionnaire item that asks respondents to assess their personal safety by answering 'how safe they feel alone in their neighborhoods at night.' More recently, however, studies have pointed to the multidimensional nature of fear of crime and perceived risk of victimization. Following this line of inquiry, we investigate the potential impact of several variable sets on three measures of f…

  • How the West was One

    K F Parker, Matthew V Pruitt•ARTICLE•Social Forces•2000•Cited by: 10

This research investigates the impact of structural conditions on rates of black and white homicide for different regions of the U.S. Particular attention is given to the claim that significant changes have occurred in regional patterns of homicide, shifting attention away from the South and toward the western region. Based on race-specific homicide rates for U.S. cities in 1990, our research provides statistical evidence of similarities in mean …
