  • Reversal of the decline in breastfeeding in Peninsular Malaysia? Ethnic and educational differentials and data quality issues

Julie Da Vanzo, Jeffrey Sine et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•1994•Referencias: 17

Data from the First and Second Malaysian Family Life Surveys in 1976 and 1988, respectively, are analyzed to examine long-term trends in breastfeeding in Peninsular Malaysia, educational and ethnic differences therein, and the quality of retrospective data on infant feeding. The steady decrease between the mid-1950's and mid-1970's in breastfeeding was reversed to become a nearly monotonic increase since 1975. Part of the change is attributable t…

  • Correlates of Short Interbirth Intervals in Peninsular Malaysia

Julie Da Vanzo, Ellen H Starbird•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1991•Citada por: 6

Recent research has shown that children born before and after short birth intervals run a considerably greater risk of dying in infancy or childhood than do others. This report investigates which women have short interbirth intervals, under what circumstances, and for what reasons. The analysis uses data from the Malaysian Family Life Survey to examine influences on the two main behaviors--breastfeeding and contraceptive use--that affect birth in…

  • Coming Home Again

Julie Da Vanzo, Frances Goldscheider et al.•ARTICLE•Population Studies•1990•Citada por: 39

The route to residential independence is not a one-way street; many young adults who leave their parents' homes subsequently return. Data from the (U.S.) National Longitudinal Study of the High School Class of 1972 are used to study young adults' returns to the parental home, to test hypotheses about the influences on these residential decisions and to examine the likely causes of the increases in returning home in recent years. Our conceptual fr…

  • Contraceptive method switching over women's reproductive careers

Open Access•Julie Da Vanzo, David M Reboussin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•1989

Several new concepts are used to describe contraceptive use histories for nearly 1200 women in Peninsular Malaysia. These histories are summarized by 81 episode histories. Transition matrices provide useful summaries of the changes women make in their contraceptive practice from one pregnancy interval to the next. Data from the mid-1940s to mid-1970s, during which period there was a dramatic increase in contraceptive use, reveal considerable iner…
