An Argument for Non‐agree‐driven Movement
This paper argues for the occurrence of movement that is not the by‐product of an Agree relation in which a probe searches for a goal. The hypothesis that not all instances of movement might be feature‐driven was entertained in early Minimalism, but it has nevertheless become widely assumed that all instances of syntactic movement should be attributed to the operation of Agree. Here, using complex patterns of DP‐internal movement in Bangla, we ar…
Cooccurrence of nonarticle determiners as evidence for split DPs and bundled projections
This research report examines crosslinguistic variation in cooccurrence among nonarticle determiners (demonstratives, proper names, pronouns, possessors) and its implications for understanding nominal (DP) structure and its variation. We present data from several language families and show that languages vary in both the number and permitted combinations of nonarticle determiners within a nominal phrase. These patterns provide new evidence that t…
Blocking Effects of Higher Numerals in Bangla
This squib explores a paradigm of blocking effects that occurs with phrasal movement taking place within nominal phrases in Bangla. We develop an argument that nominal constituents in Bangla project a mid-level QP phase below possessor phrases and demonstratives, which requires successive-cyclic movement through its edge in order to satisfy the Phase Impenetrability Condition (Chomsky 2000). If a higher DP level of structure is also assumed to pr…
