Anthropometric craniofacial pattern profiles in microcephaly
Craniofacial measurements were taken in 60 cases presenting with microcephaly. The cases were classified etiologically and morphologically and the latter was further subclassified. Craniofacial pattern profiles, cranial capacity, and the pattern variability index were calculated and compared with normal Hungarian controls of the same age and sex. In addition, correlation analysis between cranial capacity and IQ was done. Our results show signific…
Alcohol use, abuse, and alcohol-related disorders among ethnic groups in Hungary. Part I
This paper reports the results of a study on alcohol drinking habits, alcohol-related acute symptoms, and alcohol abuse among Csángós, an ethnic minority in Hungary. The demographic data revealed their social characteristics: growing old, low education, endogamous marriages, early maternal age at birth of the first baby, and a high child number per family. Alcohol use survey revealed that alcohol consumption of the Csángós is considerably high; m…
Prevention of the First Occurrence of Neural-Tube Defects by Periconceptional Vitamin Supplementation
BACKGROUND: The risk of recurrent neural-tube defects is decreased in women who take folic acid or multivitamins containing such during the periconceptional period. The extent to which folic acid supplementation can reduce the first occurrence of defects is not known. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, controlled trial of periconceptional multivitamin supplementation to test the efficacy of this treatment in reducing the incidence of a first occ…

Mortality and morbidity associated with legal abortions in Hungary, 1960-1973
In Hungary, with 10 million inhabitants, the number of induced abortions in the 1960's first approached and then reached 200,000 cases annually. These data mean that the number of induced abortions has increased substantially compared with earlier decades. A qualitative change has also occurred, from criminal abortions to, in most cases, legally induced abortions performed in hospitals. On the basis of 32 deaths directly resulting from legal indu…
Incidence of congenital dislocation of the hip in Hungary
Of the 18,219 live births registered in Békés County (Hungary) in the period 1970-72, 523 infants came to treatment for congenital dislocation of the hip. The diagnosis was verified by radiography. The incidence of 28·7 per 1,000 live births is consistent with the values noted in a previous study conducted in Budapest. Differences in applying diagnostic criteria, the high proportion of first-born infants, the unhealthy swaddling customs, and the …
Congenital dislocation of the hip in Budapest, Hungary
For the last few years nearly all newborn infants born in Budapest, a city of two million inhabitants, have received an orthopaedic examination which includes a screening test for congenital dislocation of the hip (CDH). Suspected cases of CDH were kept under observation and received treatment if necessary. In this way a total of 3,000 treated cases born between 1962 and 1967 became available for study
Changes in mean birth weight and proportion of low-weight births in Hungary
The high incidence of low-weight births (not exceeding 2,500g.) is a serious public health problem in Hungary where the deaths of low birth weight babies accounted for 68-4% of the infant mortality and 83-0% of the first week mortality in 1967. The proportion of low-weight births is probably higher in Hungary than in any other European country and appears to be increasing (Table The work pre- sented here is an attempt to investigate the reasons f…
Major malformations of the central nervous system in Hungary
Data on all major central nervous system mal formations which occurred in children born in Budapest in the years 1963-67 were collected. They were divided into four categories?anencephaly, spina bifida cystica, encephalo-meningocele, and congenital hydrocephalus. During the period of the survey, 99*7 % of Budapest deliveries took place in hospital; in Hungary the proportion was 97-8%. Data were compiled from the following sources: (1) all of the …
Studies on the fertility of radiologists
Reproductive performance and some of the more important features of their progeny were studied in 755 radiologists and in 346 laboratorians as controls in order to investigate the possible genetic injuriousness of ionizing radiation. Significant differences were found only in fertility: the fertility of female radiologists was significantly lower than that of the female laboratorians and of the wives of male radiologists. This phenomenon is proba…
