Subsistence economy in the South Caucasus during the Early Chalcolithic period
This paper examines the subsistence economy in the South Caucasus during the Early Chalcolithic (c.4700–4300 BC) through bioarchaeological analyses of the Bavra Ablari rock shelter site. This region, rich in biodiversity and characterized by a variety of climates and landscapes, has a history of agropastoral occupation dating back to the beginning of the 6 th millennium BC. Up to now, archaeological studies have mainly focused on the valleys and …
Paravani-2, a Late Upper Palaeolithic rock-shelter site in the Javakheti highland, Southern Caucasus (Georgia)
In the second half of the last century, numerous excavations were carried out in the Southern Caucasus, particularly in Georgia. However, most of the sites excavated were given a cultural attribution based on the material found, in the absence of absolute radiocarbon dating. Errors concerning the cultural attribution of sites appear to have occurred, as revealed by our re-excavation (2012–2014) of the Paravani-2 rock shelter, which was initially …

Dietary practices, cultural and social identity in the Early Bronze Age southern Caucasus
Food and its interactions with the environmental, economic, social, and cultural spheres play an essential role in communities’ cultural identity. This theory has been verified by an analysis of the Kura-Araxes (KA) culture, characterised by original cultural developments, which spread in the South Caucasus around the middle of the fourth millennium BC. This research aims to study the variability of dietary choices at the individual and populatio…

Obsidian-tempered pottery in the Southern Caucasus
New Data on the Exploitation of Obsidian in the Southern Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia) and Eastern Turkey, Part 2
Within the framework of the French archaeological mission ‘Caucasus’, in a previous paper we have presented new geochemical analyses on geological obsidians from the southern Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia) and eastern Turkey. We present here the second part of this research, which deals with provenance studies of archaeological obsidians from Armenia. These new data enhance our knowledge of obsidian exploitation over a period of more than 14 000 yea…
Obsidian Sources in the Regions of E rzurum and K ars ( N orth‐ E ast T urkey)
The obsidian sources on the E rzurum– K ars Plateau have not been extensively surveyed, and their geochemical signatures are still poorly understood. Yet a significant number of artefacts from archaeological sites in G eorgia and A rmenia have produced chemical compositions that are unrelated to any T urkish or C aucasian source analysed so far. Their origins may lie in these poorly known deposits. The objective of the collaborative project under…
New Data on the Exploitation of Obsidian in the Southern Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia) and Eastern Turkey, Part 1
A large analytical programme involving both obsidian source characterization and obsidian artefact sourcing was initiated recently within the framework of the French archaeological mission ‘Caucasus’. The results will be presented in two parts: the first part, this paper, deals with the presentation and characterization of obsidian outcrops in the southern Caucasus, while the second presents some results obtained from a selection of artefacts ori…
Kites on the margins. The Aragats kites in Armenia
Many desert kites have recently (2010) been discovered on the basaltic slopes of Mount Aragats in Armenia. The implementation of various complementary techniques (geomatics, statistical analyses, geoarchaeology, malacology, radiocarbon analysis) has enabled definition of their specificities. Isolated from the classic Syro-Jordanian zone, they are characterised by a certain simplicity, great morphological homogeneity, strongly related locations to…

Le Paléolithique en Arménie
There is certainly evidence for the Palaeolithic (Acheulean and Mousterian) in Armenia, in the plain of Ararat and in the foothills of the bordering mountains, where obsidian deposits are found ; but no new research has been carried out for 20 years. In collaboration with Armenian specialists, a French archaeological expedition has been endeavouring since 1999 to check data on the Palaeolithic in this southern part of the Caucasus, hut especially…

C Ages of Bone Fractions from Armenian Prehistoric Sites
Prehistoric cultures in Armenia are still poorly known; thus, accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dates are invaluable in constructing an accurate chronology. Bone samples have been collected from sites representing the Middle Paleolithic, Chalcolithic, and Early Bronze periods. Most of the bone samples are poorly preserved. We describe the separation technique for the extraction of both the bioapatite and collagen fractions. In many …
Réflexions méthodologiques sur les problèmes soulevés par la caractérisation des obsidiennes
Christine Chataigner. Methodological reflexions on problems posed by the characterisation of obsidian. Obsidian exchange occurred over long distances during prehistoric periods. Only analysis of the chemical composition of obsidian seems to be a relevant method for retracing the routing of this volcanic glass and the identification of its sources ; macroscopic attributes such as colour and texture can vary within the same flow. Chemical analyses …

This paper presents the preliminary results of the excavations (2004-2009) of Aknashen-Khatunarkh, a Neolithic site in the plain of Ararat. More than 300 m 2 has been excavated of this tell, which is about 100 m in diameter and 3,5 m in height. The cultural layer, more than 4 m thick, was subdivided preliminarily into five horizons, the upper one (I) belonging to the Early Chalcolithic and the others (II-V) to the Late Neolithic. A series of 1…
