The Roman Catholic Church faces a huge loss of diocesan priests in the United States. Constructing a census-registry of 36,000 priests from 1966 to 1984, and using life-table techniques, the authors foretell a dramatic future loss of priests, while predicting a rise in the churchgoing population

  • The Changing Age Distribution and Theological Attitudes of Catholic Priests Revisited

    Lawrence A Young, Richard A Schoenherr•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1992•Cited by: 3

Hoge et al. (1988) analyze the changing age distribution and theological attitudes of Catholic priests. They conclude that Schoenherr and Sorensen (1982) overestimated the number of older priests in 1985 and incorrectly projected a shift toward conservative attitudes between 1970 and 1985. Based upon newly available data, we conclude that Schoenherr and Sorensen did not overestimate the number of older priests. We also argue that Hoge et al. did …

  • Quitting the Clergy: Resignations in the Roman Catholic Priesthood

Richard A Schoenherr, Lawrence A Young•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1990

As the Catholic Church continues to grow in membership size, its internal political economy suffers sustained loss of clergy manpower. Resignations from the priestly ranks is a major component of the decline. We present here demographic data from priest population registers, created from a random sample of 86 U.S. dioceses, which document high to moderate resignation rates from 1966 through 1984. Further descriptive analysis shows that a typical …

  • Demographic Transitions in Religious Organizations: A Comparative Study of Priest Decline in Roman Catholic Dioceses

Richard A Schoenherr, Lawrence A Young et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•1988•Cited by: 2

Our aim is to adapt the theory of the demographic transition to the analysis of social change in religious organizations. Assuming the demographic transition of the clergy to be the driving force for pervasive structural change in the Roman Catholic church, we analyze the component processes of the transition as it unfolds over eight decades and document its consequences for changing the size and age distribution of the clergy population. The dat…

  • Social Change in Religious Organizations: Consequences of Clergy Decline in the U.S. Catholic Church

    Richard A Schoenherr, Annemette Sorensen•ARTICLE•Sociological Analysis•1982•Cited by: 1

Using time series data from a sample of 59 Catholic dioceses and cross-sectional data on 3045 priests, we estimate population parameters for entrance, exit, and growth rates and for the age distribution of U.S. diocesan priests from 1966–73. Three series of population projections are made to 2000. A demographic transition is dramatically reducing the size of the clergy, and altering the age and normative structures of the church toward an older, …

  • Psychological Distress and Patient Satisfaction

    James R Greenley, Theresa B Young et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•1982

Psychologically distressed patients and clients of health care and social service organizations are found to report somewhat more dissatisfaction with services than do the nondistressed. Four explanations for this relationship are examined: 1) the psychologically distressed are generally dissatisfied; 2) service providers react negatively to the psychologically distressed; 3) psychologically distressed patients are dissatisfied when service provi…

  • Role Commitment Processes and the American Catholic Priesthood

    Richard A Schoenherr, Andrew M Greeley•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1974•Cited by: 15•References: 10

In this article we develop a general model for explaining role commitment as a process in which continuing in the role depends on the net balance of its rewards and costs. With an eight-variable path model we can account for half the variance in the decisions of a sample of 3,045 American Catholic priests to stay in or leave the ministry. The causal analysis shows that the cost of celibacy is currently a priest's principal consideration in the co…
