Variations in Vietnamese marriages, births and infant deaths by months of the Julian calendar and years of the Vietnamese and Chinese astrological calendars
The timing of births and marriages in Vietnam appears to have some statistically significant relationships with the signs of the Chinese and Vietnamese astrological calendars. Years considered to be good years have significantly more births and marriages than years that are not considered as desirable. Births and marriages also have some significant variations with seasons of the year. Infant deaths do not appear to have any significant relations…

Selected determinants of fertility in vietnam
Data from the 4172 women aged 15–49 interviewed in the 1988 Vietnamese Demographic and Health Survey were used to examine age at marriage, marriage to first birth intervals and age at first birth. Differences between urban and rural areas, northern and southern provinces and by education of the women were analysed. The majority of the women had their first birth before age 20, but women with secondary education had a significantly higher age at f…
Factors influencing infant mortality in Vietnam
Selected determinants of overall infant mortality in Vietnam were examined using data from the 1988 Vietnam Demographic and Health Survey, and factors underlying neonatal and post-neonatal mortality were also compared. Effects of community development characteristics, including health care, were studied by logistic regression analysis in a subsample of rural children from the 1990 Vietnam Accessibility of Contraceptives Survey. Infant neonatal an…
Individual and community characteristics influencing breastfeeding duration in Vietnam
This analysis of selected community and maternal characteristics influencing duration of breastfeeding in Vietnam utilized data from the 1988 Demographic and Health Survey and 1990 Accessibility of Contraceptives Survey available for the 4434 children born to 2769 women having their last birth between 1983-88. Explanatory variables included as covariates in the hazards model were mother's education, age of the mother at the time of the child's bi…
Contraceptive practices and fertility among Southeast Asian, black, and white mothers attending a maternal infant care program
The purpose of this analysis was to determine if there were differences in selected fertility characteristics including parity, pregnancy spacing, age at first pregnancy, age of menarche, breastfeeding postpartum, and contraceptive practices among white, black, Hmong, and other Southeast Asian mothers attending a maternal infant care program in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during 1980–82. White and black mothers were younger than the Hmong and other A…
Relationships between pregnancy spacing, sex of infants, maternal age, and birth order, and neonatal and post-neonatal mortality in Bangladesh
The relationships between length of the interpregnancy interval, outcome of the pregnancy preceding the interval, sex of the infants, pregnancy order, maternal age, and maternal history of previous child deaths and neonatal and postneonatal mortality were explored in a rural Bangladeshi population using a multiple regression analysis. Specific interactions between the interpregnancy interval, outcome of the pregnancy preceding the interval, sex o…
High risk maternal factors related to retaled to fetel wastage in rural Banglandesh
In rural Bangladesh, early fetal wastage and stillbirth are higher among pregnancy orders one and six or higher than among orders two and three. The increased risk is particularly apparent among those pregnancies following two or more previous fetal deaths. Woman in the higher pregnancy orders who have not experienced previous fetal deaths or only one fetal death have only a slight increase in the risk of fetal death compared to women in pregnanc…
Resumption of menstruation among urban post-partum women in Bangladesh
Half the women in this study had resumed menses by the 6th month post-partum. Concurrent with these findings, less than 50% were still breast-feeding at the 6th month post-partum. The majority of these breast-feeding women were partially breast-feeding. By the 6th post-partum month more than 90% of the women had resumed intercourse and slightly less than half were using contraceptives. Nevertheless, the cross-sectional data indicate that only 25%…
The relationship between fetal wastage and pregnancy spacing in Bangladesh
The relationship between early fetal wastage or stillbirth and pregnancy spacing was examined in a population characterized by prolonged lactation, minimal nutrition, and high fertility and mortality. The highest risk of early fetal death was found among those pregnancies conceived less than twelve months after the birth of a surviving breast‐fed infant. Lactation as a possible causal factor is discussed. A significant inverse relationship was ap…
Imagery Instructions and the Comprehension of Text
S ummary . 119 fifth‐ and sixth‐grade children read a 20‐paragraph text, with half of the groups receiving a test immediately after reading. One week after learning, all children were given a delayed test. The tests measured both verbatim and semantic recall of questions seen during the initial reading. Half of the children received instructions to form mental pictures of the text events during learning. The remaining half of each group were mere…
