A family reunion of “clinical cousins”: Attachment and emotion in four family‐oriented therapy models
Attachment theory and the science of emotion provide a strong foundation for intervention at the family system level. Four therapeutic models in particular, Attachment‐Based Family Therapy, Emotion‐Focused Family Therapy, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, and Emotionally Focused Family Therapy, demonstrate how a broad and accurate view of attachment relationships and emotion can be utilized to effectively intervene for a variety of presenting p…
Caregiver openness in emotionally focused family therapy: A critical shift
Through the application of a discovery‐oriented task analysis, this research delineated specific therapist behaviors that resulted in a successful caregiver openness event in emotionally focused family therapy (EFFT). EFFT experts were recruited via email and asked to submit family therapy recordings where they believed a caregiver openness event occurred. Ten family therapy recordings were submitted by three experts. Within these recordings, 12 …
Beyond the Self: Perspectives on Identity and Transcendence Among Youth:a Special Issue of applied Developmental Science
Preliminary exploration of the Measurement of Diverse Adolescent Spirituality (MDAS) among Mexican youth
In the current article we propose and offer a preliminary test of an ecologically sensitive theoretical and methodological framework for understanding diverse adolescent spiritual development. The study summarizes the initial stages of development of the Measurement of Diverse Adolescent Spirituality (MDAS) that assesses three dimensions of spirituality: transcendence, fidelity, and contribution. We report our procedures and findings from an init…
Theology and Thriving: Teleological Considerations Based on the Doctrines of Christology and Soteriology
Notions of human thriving are abundant in psychological literature. Christian theology provides resources for shaping these notions by emphasizing particular aspects of thriving. The present paper argues for the importance of attending to the God-given telos of humanity as presented in Scripture. This paper investigates how the doctrines of Christology and soteriology can inform conceptions of a human telos and human thriving. Such an investigati…
Cultural and Contextual Issues in Exemplar Research: Cultural and Contextual Issues in Exemplar Research
This chapter specifically addresses how exemplar methods are especially relevant to examining cultural and contextual issues. Cross-cultural, cultural, and indigenous psychologies are discussed in order to highlight how studying actual exemplars in their unique and complex developmental contexts has the potential to identify themes that either differ between or hold constant across distinct peoples and cultures. The chapter addresses basic assump…
Religion as a resource for positive youth development: Religion, social capital, and moral outcomes
Although existing literature demonstrates that developmental benefits are associated with religion for adolescents, little is understood about the dynamics of this relationship. Drawing on social capital theory, this study tested a conceptual model exploring socially embedded religious influences on moral outcomes. A three-dimensional model of social capital demonstrated how social interaction, trust, and shared vision enable social ties associat…
Religion and Positive Youth Development: Identity, Meaning, and Prosocial Concerns
The role of religious identity in positive youth development was examined in this study of personal meaning and prosocial concerns in adolescence. A structural equation model was tested on a sample of 801 urban public high school students. Participants responded to questionnaires assessing religious identity, personal meaning, and prosocial personality. Prototypical descriptors derived from Walker and Pitts's (1998) highly religious person concep…

A Qualitative Exploration of Relational Consciousness in Christian Children
Nye's (1998) core construct of relational consciousness in child spirituality embraces a wider dialogue with social and personality psychology. Relatedness in spirituality implies the importance of language, mind, and the self as guideposts for development. In this research we seek to qualitatively expand our understanding of relational consciousness around recent work in these three domains. Twelve school-age children are given detailed intervie…
The Role of Secure Attachment in Predicting Spiritual Maturity of Students at a Conservative Seminary
Previous research on attachment relationships suggests that early parental interactions generate internalized models of self and others–-models which are carried forward in later relationships. In order to investigate the relationships between secure attachment styles and their collective influence on spiritual maturity, a survey of 216 seminary students was conducted using the Parental Bonding Instrument, Adult Attachment Scale, and the Faith Ma…
The Ideal Father: Religious Narratives and the Role of Fatherhood
Central to any discussion of a new fatherhood is the declaration of the “ideal father.” Authors have emphasized the importance of cultural narratives in shaping a response to this issue. The Christian men's movement has raised its own model informed by religious values and language. This article describes three perspectives that are needed in evaluating the role of religious values in shaping a fatherhood ideal. Identity theory provides a means f…
Polygyny and Marital Life Satisfaction: An Exploratory Study from Rural Cameroon
Although some research has focused on the relationships of polygyny to fertility and to divorce, very little recent research has assessed relationships between polygyny and marital or life satisfaction. Using data collected in the spring of 1992 from a survey of 300 maternal-child dyads in rural zones of the Wes tern Province of Cameroon, measures of life and marital satisfaction were correlated with maternal marital status. There was a slight te…
