    Open Access•José Antonio Sanahuja, Marina Vitelli et al.•ARTICLE•Estudos Ibero-Americanos•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 21

  • Back to basics: Assessing military involvement in politics in contemporary Brazil

    Open Access•Marina Vitelli•ARTICLE•Brasiliana- Journal for Brazilian…•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 2

As Brazil showed signs of progress in civil-military relations in the late nineties and early 2000s, research moved from civilian control to defense policy topics, resulting in the neglect of less obvious forms of military involvement in politics, many of which pre-date the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro. After critically reviewing existing frameworks for assessing progress in civilian control we propose returning to the field's primary concern wit…

  • The Impossibility of a Defence Policy in the Americas? Comparing Hemispheric and South American Security Concepts and Military Roles

    Open Access•Marina Vitelli•ARTICLE•Contexto Internacional•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 16

This article analyses the competing security perspectives of hemispheric and South American defence cooperation initiatives. While the Organization of American States (OAS) emphasises domestic roles for armed forces in the region, concentrating on internal threats such as organised crime and terrorism, the South American Defence Council (CDS) emphasises the traditional conception of security, concentrating on the defence of sovereign states again…

  • Civil-Military Relations and Military Missions in Contemporary Latin America: Argentina's Sinuous Path Towards a Democratic Defense Policy (2011-2016)

    Open Access•Marina Vitelli, Marina Gisela Vitelli•ARTICLE•Brazilian Political Science Review•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 16

After three decades of democratic reforms, the literature on Latin American civil-military relations has shifted its focus from the military towards civilian elites. Following this trend, this article offers a contribution to the study of the 'civilian variable' by examining two controversial decisions taken by Argentina since 2011: the empowerment of an army official who gained influence over key areas of national defense; and the involvement of…

  • The South American Defense Council: The Building of a Community of Practice for Regional Defense

    Open Access•Marina Vitelli•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Política…•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 2

While the South American Defense Council has been analyzed as a security community, we argue that it is best described as an early stage community of practice, since it has successfully set in motion a regular interaction dynamic between numerous defense actors, as we demonstrate with concrete examples. We further discuss political support as a prerequisite for regional defense identity

  • La identidad estratégica de Brasil: Política de defensa para un jugador global

    Open Access•Marina Vitelli•ARTICLE•Colombia Internacional•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 6

The article analyzes current Brazilian defense policy, tracing key ideas from the military thinking that originated in the late seventies and establishing links with the international policy perspective of the Workers Party and one sector of the diplomatic corps. These two elements, which account for Brazil’s current strategic identity, are presented as fundamental variables for analyzing defense policy and its relation to certain aspects of Braz…
