Multifactorial approach to describe early diagenesis of bones
The excavation of the Merovingian cemetery of Saint-Linaire (France) was an opportunity to describe the completeness of the tombs preserved from soil erosion. An anthropobiological study was carried out on the osteological material and the different categories of graves. On the basis of a complete archaeo-anthropological corpus we have undertaken an analysis of the differential preservation of the bones according to the different archaeobiologica…
Geochemical identity of pre-Dogon and Dogon populations at Bandiagara (Mali, 11th–20th cent. AD)
Presented here are some aspects of an archaeological investigation conducted in eastern Mauritania in the region of Dhar Nema, a south-eastern extension of the Oualata and Tichitt cliffs (Dhar). This evidence is presented with a focus on its environmental context. The escarpment of the Dhar, a specific geomorphological environment, provided a refuge geoecosystem that continued to supply water during the second part of the Holocene. During the per…
Intra-skeletal variability in trace elemental content of Precolumbian Chupicuaro human bones
Exposure to PAHs of workers on contaminated sites
The SOLEX study sought to assess the occupational contribution to PAHs exposure among employees working on former gasworks sites. Four categories of volunteers were selected according to their job profile: office, mixed, outdoor, and remediation (workers close to a soil desorber); during each of the two study periods (November 1997 and June 1998) a reference group was also recruited. Personal exposure was estimated by 1‐HOP measurements in urine …
Evidence of physico–chemical and isotopic modifications in archaeological bones during controlled acid etching
It has been repeatedly shown that palaeoecological inferences from the elemental and isotopic content of carbonate hydroxylapatite of fossil teeth and bones are unrecoverable without removing diagenetic overprinting by chemical pretreatments. Such pretreatments may in turn cause modification of the biogenic signature. In this paper, we focus upon optimal removal of Ca–bearing carbonates (mainly calcite). In order to control the progress with time…
The Dia archaeological project
Mali is a country with a rich history and diverse cultures. Its cultural heritage is, however, threatened by both the pillage of archaeological sites and illicit trade (ICOM 1995; Bedaux & Rowlands, this volunle). Looting has dramatically increased in recent years, especially in the Inland Delta of the Niger, and has obliged Malian authorities to take measures to counteract this destruction. Within the framework of a long-term Malian-Dutch cultur…
Diagenetic evolution and experimental heating of bone phosphate

Early Diagenetic Evolution of Bone Phosphate
Alain Person, Nour E. Saoudi, Sylvie Amblard The preliminary results of a field campaign performed in January-February 1994 on the environment of the archaeological settlements in the Dhars Tichitt and Oualata region (South-eastern Mauritania) are presented here from a methodological point of view. The sedimentary faciès are interpreted mainly in terms of climatic changes linked to the human settlements. It seems that the most important phase of …
Preservation of13C/12C Original Ratio and14C Dating of the Mineral Fraction of Human Bones From Saharan Tombs, Niger
Radiocarbon Dating of Mortars From Ancient Greek Palaces
This study deals with radiocarbon dating of lime mortars which were used as supports for Mycenaean and Minoan paintings. The 14 C dates are. on the whole, compatible with the historical data. and thus show that a large proportion of the Mycenaean surficial coatings can be dated by the radiocarbon method. However. in order to determine the age of the mortars accurately. it is necessary to evaluate the amount of sedimentary carbonate which may have…
