  • Memory, body, and the online researcher: Following Russian street demonstrations via social media

    Open Access•Patty A Gray•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2016•Cited by: 19•References: 22

The Moscow street demonstrations of 2011-12 were the largest public gatherings in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union. They were also the largest-ever gathering of Russians on social media. While using the Internet to follow such large-scale social movements remotely, researchers experience social media as a context in which anthropology happens. They may think about "being there" in new ways that shift their focus to their own processe…

    Open Access•Patty A Gray•ARTICLE•Anthropology Today•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 6

While the Soviet Union was a significant donor of international development aid, since the 1990s, a generation of Russians has experienced the subject position of ‘recipient’ in the global political economy. However, following its G8 presidency in 2006, Russia officially signalled its intention to (re‐)emerge as an aid donor. Should the Russian government's efforts to join the global community of donors be understood as a defence mechanism agains…

    Open Access•Patty A Gray•ARTICLE•Études/Inuit/Studies•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This paper, based on the author's extensive field research in Chukotka in the 1990s, examines the conditions for Indigenous activism in Chukotka during the decade following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The Indigenous movement in Chukotka faced extremely difficult conditions in the 1990s because of a concerted attack by a belligerent and chauvinistic regional administration that sought to undermine any effort on the part of Indigenous acti…

  • The Last Kulak' and Other Stories of Post-Privatisation Life in Chukotka's Tundra

    Open Access•Patty A Gray•ARTICLE•Nomadic Peoples•2006•Cited by: 2

Privatisation of state farms in Russia precipitated a crisis in the reindeer herding economy. Chukotka once had the largest domestic reindeer herd in Russia, and the plummet in Chukotka's reindeer headcounts was steeper than anywhere else in the country. At the same time, reindeer herding in some regions of Russia, such as Yamal, remained relatively stable. This paper argues that much of the difference between Chukotka and other regions can be at…

  • Who owns Siberian ethnography? A critical assessment of a re-internationalized field

    Open Access•Patty A Gray, Patty Gray et al.•ARTICLE•Sibirica•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Although Siberian ethnography was an open and international field at the turn of the twentieth century, from about 1930 until the late 1980s Siberia was for the most part closed to foreigners and therefore to Western ethnographers. This allowed Soviet ethnographers to establish a virtual monopoly on Siberian field sites. Soviet and Western anthropology developed during that period in relative isolation from one another, allowing methodologies and…
