  • Identifying pediatric extrapulmonary tuberculosis through an active screening program

Open Access•Giordano Sosa Soto, Jeffrey I Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

We assessed 188 children diagnosed with extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Bangladesh. Over half were aged 10–14 years old. Common symptoms included fever (91.5%), weight loss (88.3%), and decreased appetite (72.9%). Four children died prior to treatment; of 176 children on treatment, 4.0% had unsuccessful outcomes, potentially influenced by age and low weight. Findings highlight the need for improved diagnosis and management in children.

  • Age and sex differences in paediatric tuberculosis care for child contacts

Open Access•Allison Boretsky, Farhana Amanullah et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: Childhood tuberculosis (TB) remains difficult to diagnose, even among exposed household contacts. We assessed age- and sex-specific gaps in TB screening, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment among child contacts in a high-burden setting. Methods: As part of a large active screening program in Kotri, Pakistan, from 2014-2016, children aged 0-14 years with household TB exposure were screened for TB disease. We analysed their progression…

  • Usability and acceptability of a novel TB infection diagnostic test among key populations in Mexicali

Open Access•Amanda Brumwell, Rosa Herrera et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Tuberculin skin test (TST) remains the standard-of-care test for TB infection in many high TB-burden settings. Despite existing diagnostics overcoming challenges associated with TST implementation, there has been poor uptake programmatically. We conducted formative research into patients’ and providers’ perceptions of acceptability and usability of a novel IGRA test, called QIAreach QuantiFERON TB (or, QIAreach), compared to TST in a programmatic…

  • Age- and sex-specific care cascades to detect gaps in the care of children with tuberculosis in Bangladesh

Open Access•Daniel Ramirez, Amanda Brumwell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2025

Background: Programmatic interventions to increase the detection of children with tuberculosis (TB) are rarely evaluated to understand age- and sex-specific completion rates. We applied modified TB screening and treatment cascade frameworks to assess indicators of effective implementation by age and sex of a TB screening program for children (zero to 14 years) in Bangladesh. Methods: tests. Results: In total, we screened 552 182 males and 461 419…

  • Task-sharing spinal anaesthesia care in three rural Indian hospitals

Open Access•Nandakumar Menon, Regi George et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2024

BACKGROUND: Task-sharing of spinal anaesthesia care by non-specialist graduate physicians, termed medical officers (MOs), is commonly practised in rural Indian healthcare facilities to mitigate workforce constraints. We sought to assess whether spinal anaesthesia failure rates of MOs were non-inferior to those of consultant anaesthesiologists (CA) following a standardised educational curriculum. METHODS: We performed a randomised, non-inferiority…

  • Tuberculosis treatment loss to follow-up in children exposed at home

Open Access•Meredith B Brooks, Brittney van de Water et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

Background: Loss to follow-up (LTFU) from tuberculosis (TB) treatment and care is a significant public health problem. It is important to understand what drives LTFU in children - a population whose treatment and management depend on an adult caregiver - to better provide support services to families affected by TB. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of household contacts in Lima, Peru (2009-12). Using multilevel logistic regression…

  • A costing framework to compare tuberculosis infection tests

Open Access•Amanda Brumwell, Jade Tso et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2023

OBJECTIVE: To develop a framework to estimate the practical costs incurred from, and programmatic impact related to, tuberculosis (TB) infection testing-tuberculin skin tests (TST) versus interferon gamma release assay (IGRA)-in a densely populated high-burden TB area. METHODS: We developed a seven-step framework that can be tailored to individual TB programmes seeking to compare TB infection (TBI) diagnostics to inform decision-making. We presen…

  • Feasibility of a school-based mental health program implementation to improve the status of depression and quality of life of mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders in urban Bangladesh

Open Access•Aliya Naheed, Md Saimul Islam et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Prisms Global Mental…•2022

Within special education schools for ASD in urban Bangladesh, it was feasible to administer an integrated program of PCS for mothers of children with ASD by trained psychologists who were able to screen and intervene to reduce their level of depression and improve their quality of life

  • Predictors of unsuccessful tuberculosis treatment outcomes in children from a prospective cohort study in Pakistan

    Open Access•Meredith B Brooks, Amyn A Malik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2021

BACKGROUND: Every year, about 239 000 children die from tuberculosis (TB), despite availability of highly effective regimens. Few studies have evaluated predictors for poor treatment outcomes in children treated for TB. METHODS: We assessed predictors of unsuccessful TB treatment outcomes in a prospective cohort of children diagnosed by an intensified TB patient-finding intervention at four facilities in Pakistan between 2014 and 2016. A case of …
