  • Persistence on Living, Resistance for the Living

    Open Access•Yousif M Qasmiyeh•ARTICLE•Migration and Society•2024

It is through writing that times and spaces are made, ones that stand tall in the face of this world's incessant catastrophes. In this issue's Creative Encounters section, "The Radiator" by Ngoi Hui Chien tenderly questions both difference around us and us as difference, and how subjectivities that are arguably concerned with the homely can also be entry points to strangerhood in new settings. In the following collaborative work, Hanno Brankamp a…

  • Prismatic Jane Eyre: Close-Reading a World Novel Across Languages

Matthew Reynolds, Andrés Claro et al.•BOOK•Prismatic Jane Eyre•2023

"Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Brontë and first published in 1847, has been translated more than five hundred times into over sixty languages. Prismatic Jane Eyre argues that we should see these many re-writings, not as simple replications of the novel, but as a release of its multiple interpretative possibilities: in other words, as a prism. Prismatic Jane Eyre develops the theoretical ramifications of this idea, and reads Brontë's novel in th…

  • Refugees’ Pandemic Responses in a Palestinian Camp in Lebanon

    Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh, Yousif M Qasmiyeh•ARTICLE•Current History•2020

Palestinian refugee camps, long established in Lebanon, have become havens for people from other nationalities as well, most recently Syrians who fled the civil war. Accustomed to neglect or outright hostility from Lebanese officials, camp residents have come to rely on each other for support. The COVID-19 pandemic has stretched these networks of mutual aid to the limit. This article offers an intimate view of everyday life during the crisis in a…

  • Time

    Open Access•Yousif M Qasmiyeh•ARTICLE•Humanities•2020

This time sequence opens with a soliloquy, or more precisely, a submission to time, in the form of personal lamentations, and is followed by irregular stanzas spanning unidentified episodes of journeying, the intention to do so, or total stasis. Throughout, time is continuously prodded by the intimate journey within one’s own time, by its linguistic and haptic promise, through the name and naming, the names passed on from parents to their child. …

  • At the Feast of Asylum

    Yousif M Qasmiyeh•ARTICLE•GeoHumanities•2016•Cited by: 1

[Man] is the being who has to grasp his being" (Levinas 2000, 25). But what or who do refugees, or placeless people, grasp? When within what is now deemed normality, their bodies lie bare and afloat only to announce their coming but never their presence. From afar, they might think of time, a place, and above all gods, not knowing whether it is time for them to ascend, descend, or stay still. In the end, they never arrive

    Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh, Yousif M Qasmiyeh•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2010•Cited by: 12•References: 5

In the current geopolitical context, religion, nationality and country of origin have increasingly become intertwined and politicized in relation to asylum, both as policy and as personal experience. Based on interviews conducted in the UK with a range of Middle Eastern Muslim asylum-seekers and refugees, this article proposes that regional and religious identity markers have grown to dictate interactions, be they real or imagined, with the host …
