Too hard, too confronting: The reluctance of schools to publicly acknowledge harm
Despite having the largest caregiving responsibilities for children outside of families, schools are settings in which egregious forms of harm to children have occurred. As further allegations of non-recent and contemporary abuse of children in schools come to light, principals must decide whether to publicly acknowledge this harm and grapple with the complexities of how to do so.
Nothing to See Here: Researching Non‐Recent Child Abuse in Schools and the Politics of Silence
While institutions, including schools, have responsibilities to protect children from harm, responses to instances of child sexual abuse have often exhibited avoidance and denial. Recent public inquiries in Australia revealed that some institutions, particularly in the Catholic sector, employed a deliberate strategy of silence which was used to conceal abuse to protect their public image. In response, these inquiries called for silence to be repl…
Society as an ethical system
The idea of society on which the social sciences are premised is one of a structured pattern of interdependence and interaction that drives participation in a shared communication space and, thereby, a degree of common consciousness. These are also the preconditions for ethics to operate as an internal mode of self-understanding rather than an external imposition. Societies, in other words, are ethical systems. In order to understand in what sens…
Sugar Machines: Picturing Industrialized Slavery
Throughout the Atlantic world, from the mid-sixteenth to the mid-nineteenth century, technology trumped humanity in visual representations of sugar plantations and their enslaved workforces. European artists presented the production of sugar as technologically progressive, while minimizing its crucial conjunction with slave labor. The sugarmill, with its vertical three-roller mills and trains of evaporative vats, became a synecdoche of the most i…
Herman Moll’s The World Described (1720): Mapping Britain’s Global and Imperial Interests
Herman Moll’s The World Described (1720), the pre-eminent folio atlas of Hanoverian Britain, departs from the usual Ortelian model in the selection and ordering of its contents. It placed Britain at the centre of the atlas so that the first half provided a cartographic description of Britain’s overseas commercial interests, while the second half showed the kingdom’s political interests on the Continent. The argument presented here is that Moll ga…
Minding Your Matters: Predicting Satisfaction, Commitment, and Conflict Strategies From Trait Mindfulness
This exploratory study sought to uncover whether trait mindfulness, an individual's aptitude for focusing on the present moment while refraining from passing negative judgments or processing external cues in a habitual manner, is predictive of more constructive and less destructive approaches to relational conflict. In addition, we looked at its predictive role in relational satisfaction and commitment. Ninety-one participants completed self-repo…
Open Data for Resilience Initiative: Field Guide
Credible information about risk is an \n essential element of Disaster Risk Management (DRM). \n Thousands of times each year, disasters reveal decisions \n about how to apply this information to the management of \n risk. When a school collapses during a moderate earthquake, \n citizens may point to the failure of the construction firm \n to adhere to building standards, or to the failure of a \n government to enforce building codes, or to the e…
Biodiversity and climate change: Ethics and Science
Biodiversity and climate change are phenomena constructed on the basis of scientific knowledge. It is this distinctive epistemological status that gives rise to some of their most significant ethical properties. They are not autonomous scientific problems on which ethical thinking can be superimposed from the outside, any more than they are ethical concerns that have been gradually fuelled by factual elements. Rather, they are inseparably cogniti…

While most computer games are devoid of political con~tent, at least two gaming universes have an explicitly political character, namely strategy and quest games, which have an imaginary that lends itself to suggestive analysis. What is striking is that such games have almost no place for democracy. There are two sets of reasons, with rather different implica~tions. First genre, which connects digital universes to science fiction and heroic fanta…

From research policy to the governance of research? A theoretical framework and some empirical conclusions
Culture' and 'change' are not words typically yoked together in social science. Indeed, the whole point of explanatory recourse to culture is to account for permanencies. Nonetheless, subject to certain conceptual precautions, middle range cultural analysis can work in conjunction with mainstream political science to clarify processes of policy change. The paper illustrates this by focusing on the case of European research policies and practices.…
Picturing the Caribbean in the Global British Landscape
Picturing the Caribbean in the Global British Landscape JOHN E. CROWLEY Topographic representations of British realms increased markedly in the period from the Seven Years' War to the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars. The topographic impulse in eighteenth-century British landscape art Â-to produce recognizable illustrations of scenes that had been viewed firsthand Â-sought to make a rapidly enlarging British world understandable to the political …

Internationalization and the Governance of Research
This paper addresses two main questions. First, is it appropriate to talk of the internationalization of EU research policies, and if so in which sense? Secondly, in so far as elements of internationalization are observable, how can this be explained? After summarizing the objectives, conceptual framework and hypotheses of the research conducted in the INNOCULT project, from which this paper is drawn, we consider the various dimensions of interna…

Integration in theory and practice: A comparison of France and Britain
The authors compare the integration of immigrants in France and Britain in terms of the theoretical models, politics and practice in each country. In France, the tradition of republicanism is emphasised, and thus a legacy of integrating immigrants under this banner is proclaimed; in Britain there is no real analogue to this, and no common myth which is shared across the spectrum of political opinion, though historical conditions have also shaped …
The Political Participation of Ethnic Minorities
The author calls attention to the theoretical and empirical difficulties of assigning a presumptive capacity for collective consciousness and action to ethnic categories. Evidence from Western Europe shows how the ways in which numerically small ethnic groups are recognized, either positively or negatively, may promote specific forms of marginalization in democratic systems. To this extent, an ethnic problem exists within Western liberal democrac…
The national dimension of citizenship in T.H. Marshall
In the revival of the political theory of citizenship, T.H. Marshall is a seminal influence. A major attraction is clearly his apparent reversal of the usual relation between membership and rights. Whereas rights are commonly regarded as deriving from membership, Marshall raises the possibility that appropriate combinations of rights may be constitutive of membership in the form of citizenship, a form not determined by any prior identity. This is…

Paradoxes in the politicisation of race: A comparison of the UK and France
The desire to keep ‘immigration’ and ‘race’ out of politics is a natural response to the threat of the far right. When taken seriously by mainstream politicians (as in the UK), depoliticisation does in fact prove fairly successful in party‐political terms. Conversely its absence (as in France) is clearly detrimental. Yet, in a deeper sense, it is also shortsighted and misleading. So long as ethnic minorities have a political voice, they will rais…

Surveying the European Public Space - A Political and Research Agenda
This paper examines the reasons why it is justified to talk about a European 'democratic deficit'. The creation and consolidation of a European public space necessitates conceptual clarification at the normative theoretical level - as liberal democracy is historically closely bound to the nation-state - and action at the policy and political levels. A Union of European Citizens is a step towards, but not equivalent to, a democratic Union based on…

European integration: Sociological process or political project
Within debate about prospects for future European unification, ‘integration’ is a fashionable and often confusing word. Depending on context, it may refer to long‐term socio‐economic processes ('convergence'), to processes of political construction, to symbolic processes ('European identity'), or to the quite separate issue of prudential co‐operation between states—or to some uncertain mixture of all four. Yet the concept of integration has a rep…
Social complexity and strong democracy
The pluralistic liberal paradigm of democracy has shown its inability to guarantee economic prosperity and political stability and, as a consequence, has become increasingly vulnerable. Within political theory, democratic criticism of liberalism has mainly proceeded along two paths. Le vote secret contre la démocratie américaine (1880-1910)
Le vote secret contre la démocratie américaine. John Crowley.

The Privileges of Independence: Neomercantilism and the American Revolution
In this volume, John Crowley argues that the US colonies' successful revolt did not mean they wished to end their privileged commercial dependence on Great Britain. From the 1760s through the mid-1790s, in fact, Anglo-American political economists grappled with the transistion from a de jure to a de facto economic dependence of the new states on their former mother country. Crowley shows that the Revolutionaries were not principled free-traders a…
