Outcomes of Pediatric Orthopedic Management of Ambulatory Cerebral Palsy Utilizing a Closely Monitored, Lifespan-Guided Approach
Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a static, non-progressive brain pathology that affects mobility and musculoskeletal health. Objective: This review aims to describe the pediatric orthopedic management strategy at one specialty center with focus on optimal lifelong mobility function for ambulatory CP. Methods: Beginning in the 1990s, a protocol was developed to proactively monitor children with surgical or conservative interventions. After three…
Health-Related Quality of Life of Individuals with Physical Disabilities in Childhood
Background : The use of patient-reported outcomes is essential to understand and manage health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in youth with lifelong disabilities. This study evaluated HRQOL in youth with physical disorders and examined its relationship with mobility. Methods: We conducted an IRB-approved retrospective study in which we administered the parent-reported Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) and Gross Motor Function…
A Novel Method to Study Hip Growth and Development in Children with Cerebral Palsy
This novel assessment method demonstrates that ossification of the lateral acetabulum and femoral head in children with CP GMFCS IV/V from age 8 to 12 years undergoes a mean decrease of 10% MP. A decrease of 10% MP after proximal femoral-guided growth has been reported as a positive outcome. However, based on the current measurements, this may be due to normal development. HSA and NSA remained unchanged
Identifying Opportunities for Early Detection of Cerebral Palsy
This study aimed to evaluate assessment and referral practices for the early detection and diagnosis of children at risk for or with cerebral palsy (CP) by health care and education providers in Maryland and Delaware. A secondary aim was to identify barriers for using early detection tools and identify opportunities for change to support early diagnosis and improve care. Seventy-two participants answered ≥ 50% of the survey questions. Most were o…
Kinematic Changes throughout Childhood in Youth with Cerebral Palsy
Improvement in gait kinematics in children with CP is significantly influenced by age and timing of orthopaedic surgical intervention for gait correction, and was most pronounced for children 10 years old. These results reinforce the importance of considering the timing of orthopaedic surgery
The Impact of Covid-19 on Multidisciplinary Care Delivery to Children with Cerebral Palsy and Other Neuromuscular Complex Chronic Conditions
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented challenges in the care of children with cerebral palsy (CP) and other neuromuscular complex chronic conditions (NCCCs). The purpose of this study is to explore the direct impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare delivery. From May to August 2020, medical professionals caring for CP and NCCC patients across multiple countries and disciplines completed a self-administered cross-sectional survey co…
