  • Odysseus and the Siren Song of Knowledge

    Open Access•Vincent Barletta•ARTICLE•Humanities•2026•References: 3

This article rereads Odysseus’s encounter with the Sirens in the Odyssey through the lens of sound, arguing that the episode stages a foundational tension between knowledge and alterity in Western thought. Drawing on Emmanuel Levinas’s notion of the “temptation of temptation,” the essay shows how Odysseus’s famous stratagem—hearing the Sirens while bound to the mast—models a form of mediated proximity that allows sound to be collected without eth…

  • Oswald de Andrade and the Cannibalist Science of Others' Blood

    Vincent Barletta, Arhaan Gupta-Rastogi•ARTICLE•Hispania•2024

In the present essay, we offer a close examination of Oswald de Andrade's call for blood transfusers in the "Manifesto antropófago." Documenting specific forms of scientific innovation and references to blood transfusion in the broader cultural field, we argue for an approach to the "Manifesto" that considers Haroldo de Campos's arguments regarding the national/universal dialectic at the center of Oswald's text while also addressing more fully th…

  • Kaddish Yatom: “Kaddish Yatom”

  • Closeness before the law: Purity, prayer, and al-Tulaytulī’s Mukhtasar

    Vincent Barletta•ARTICLE•Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies•2016•References: 2

The present study focuses on the intersection between Islamic jurisprudence, poetics, and manuscript culture in the secret Muslim communities (moriscos) of sixteenth-century Aragon. Using as a theoretical rubric the Islamic legal concept of curf (“custom”), I argue that early modern Aragonese Muslims made use of handwritten Islamic legal texts, and the physical books that contained them, to incorporate specific and adaptive local innovations into…

  • Lusofonia and Eternal Empire: Notes from the Sixteenth Century

    Open Access•Vincent Barletta•ARTICLE•Portuguese Literary and Cultural…•2016

Framed as love and commonality, as a shared patrimony, as the eternal spirit of empire, or as a "sad and ridiculous" attempt to exert influence long after the fact, the workings of Lusofonia may or may not have evolved over the past five centuries. What seems clear, however, is that the Portuguese language has been understood since at least the sixteenth century as not only the "companion" or tool of Portugal's empire, but rather as its most endu…

  • Deixis, taqiyya, and textual mediation in crypto-Muslim Aragon

    Vincent Barletta•ARTICLE•Text and Talk•2008

The present article is an analysis of the scribal and lectoral activities of crypto-Muslim minority communities within sixteenth-century Aragon (Spain). Looking specifically at traditional Islamic texts translated into Ibero-Romance and copied out in Arabic script (a largely ad hoc writing system that modern scholars have termed aljamiado [pronounced: al-xam-yAH-ðo]), this article focuses on the ways in which these texts index specific frameworks…

  • The Evolution of Converso Literature: The Writings of the Converted Jews of Medieval Spain

    Vincent Barletta, Gregory B Kaplan•ARTICLE•Hispania•2005

During the early 15th century, many Spanish Jews converted to Christianity to escape persecution in the wake of widespread anti-Jewish violence in the 1390s. The extent to which the literature written by these conversos accurately reflects their social and legal alienation from the Old Christian (non-converso) population has long been debated. This book is the first comprehensive examination of this literature, setting its parameters and providin…
