The Optical Machine's Asynchronic Progress
In this article I address the unsolved problem of how the eighteenth-century optical machine generated an illusion of spatial depth and why variations of the apparatus continued to be produced well into the twentieth century when it should have been superseded by technically superior devices such as the stereoscope. I trace, across a diverse constellation of artefacts, design themes and variations that I take as evidence of embedded artisanal kno…
Perspectives bâtardes ’
Stereoscopy initiated a dimensional shift that freed representation from the laws of geometric optics and longstanding conventions of linear perspective, creating aesthetic possibilities that were first explored by now obscure stereo-photographers. The late nineteenth-century ‘rupture in the pictorial order’ that Hubert Damisch attributes to Paul Cézanne has a genealogy that includes stereoscopy, the debates about binocular space perception that …

Scenes of Projection

Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 2015. Pp. 336. $27.50. A book as theoretically provocative and methodologically transgressive as Jill Casid’s Scenes of Projection is bound to be fruitful, if not always for the reasons that the author intends. Reading Stereoviews
In this essay I argue that the diverse archive of stereoscopic imagery has not so far been properly read historically – that is, in relation to its material and discursive context. The early-nineteenth-century context was characterised by multiple positions in debate which can be used to make sense of three broad projects of stereoscopic representation. The first, naïve realist project was to subsume stereoscopy under geometric optics and to clai…
Hybrid Projection, Machinic Exhibition and the Eighteenth-Century Critique of Vision
Vertical Perspective Does Not Exist
In this paper I address the question of why the everyday experience of seeing verticals converge remained taboo in Western visual culture until the late nineteenth century and in painting until the 1920s. I argue that perspective theory was fused to a pre-Copernican, architectural model of space and a static model of vision based on Enlightenment optics rather than physiology. The dynamism of modernity and technologies of embodied vision such as …
Social Movements in a Global Context
Modernism and the Machine Farmer
In this paper I apply recent theoretical discussions of the spatial character of modernity to a 'rural' context. I argue that neither modernity nor 'modernism' has been an exclusively 'urban' phenomenon in the twentieth century, and that attention to modernism in the countryside yields insights into the modernist project. From the beginning of the twentieth century, the apparently 'rural' spaces of the prairie west were already integrated into mo…
Feminism and the Grass Roots

Hegemony and the Power of Constitution
Anumber of authors have documented the emergence, in the last two decades, of coalitions between organized labour and environmentalists. There has been a parallel growth in neo-Gramscian literature on the nature of such coalitions and their meaning for the Left. In this paper I use a comparative case study of coalition building efforts in Maine and Nova Scotia to address both of these literatures
Benthamism in the Countryside
Historians of state formation have increasingly recognized what Foucault has described as the 'dark side' of the enlightenment institutional principles of representation, transparency and accountability and explored the parallel principles of legitimation, surveillance and discipline. In this paper, I pursue these themes in a neglected area, the institutional architecture of rural space. I do so by examining ideologies for rural planning in weste…
Governing the Great Plains
In this paper I argue, using a comparative analysis of Saskatchewan and North Dakota, that differences in the design of local government affected the degree of local influence of the regional state and shaped the course of agrarian political protest
A Fragile Power
When the National Science Foundation funds research about the earth's crust and the Department of Energy supports studies on the disposal of nuclear wastes, what do they expect for their money? Most scientists believe that in such cases the government wants information for immediate use or directions for seeking future benefits from nature. Challenging this oversimplified view, Chandra Mukerji depicts a more complex interdependence between scienc…
