Burials from Chekon 2018 Settlement of the Maikop-Novosvobodnaya Community (Preliminary Report)
The article focuses on the burials in the cultural layer of Chekon settlement excavated by A. I. Yudin in 2018. In total, a little more than 10 burials have been identified on the site, in pits – mud huts or beyond. The discovered burials differ in many respects from the traditions of the Maikop practice of burying countrymen in barrows. The Tradition of Spoiling Vessels
The article reviews the deformed metallic and ceramic vessels of the Maikop-Novosvobodnenskaya community. The study is mainly based on the author’s photographs and sketches, stored in the State Hermitage Museum. The artifacts themselves were published numerous times, but the deformation of vessels, in particular, has not yet been covered. An Early Bronze Age Hoard of Bronze Tools from Dvin, Central Armenia
We describe a hoard found in 2018 on a hilltop near the village of Dvin, Armenia, and comprising seven daggers and six adzes. Similar pickaxes and adzes were found in caches at Dzhrashen, Yerevan, and at Nahal-Mishmar, Israel. A peculiar feature of the Dvin adzes is that their blades are sharply rounded, resembling those of the Bronze Age battle axes. We describe two unique fi nds from the 2018 excavations at the Maikop-Novosvobodnaya settlements of Pervomayskoye and Chekon in the Krasnodar Territory: a pendant and a clay figurine of a goddess, respectively. The parquet ornament on the pendant is paralleled by that on a cylindrical pendant-seal from Chekon. This article presents a brief overview of Maikop-Novosvobodnaya assemblages with gold ornaments. Special attention is paid to symbolism. Gold ring pendants were found in four Middle Bronze Age burials near Meneralnye Vody, central north Caucasus. One of them (burial 4 under kurgan 3 at Lysogorsky-6) is very unusual. We describe four unusual burials (No. 4, 8, 13, and 15) displaying features of the Pit-Grave rite under mound 1 at Levoyegorlyksky-3 in the Stavropol Territory, dating to mid-4th millennium BC. The mound had been constructed to mark the main burial (No. 15), which predates others. While the preservation of skeletons is poor, the position of the deceased was determined as fl exed supine. The X-ray fluorescence analysis has revealed traces of cinnabar on the inside of the vault bones of one cranium. The article reports a Chalcolithic–early Bronze Age scepter .ftnial and an ornamented axe-hammer. Both objects have been found in the submontane region of the northwestern Caucasus. Analysis of the shapes of these rare artifacts allows consideration of the problem of cultural contacts between the populations of the Western Caucasus and Southeast Europe during this period
