Migration infrastructure, moral economy, and intergenerational injustice in mother-and-child migration from the Philippines to Japan
In this paper, I discuss how a legal amendment in Japan’s Nationality law, in force since 2009 and celebrated as a victory for children’s rights, soon opened new opportunities for labour brokers to send Japanese-Filipino offspring and their Filipina mothers to work in Japanese care-giving facilities and in factories. While the processes of recruitment, selection, training and placement resemble those commonly followed by commercial migrant brokers…
Migration at Work
Migration and Labour Mobility\nThe willingness to migrate in search of employment is in itself insufficient to compel anyone to move. The dynamics of labour mobility are heavily influenced by the opportunities perceived and the imaginaries held by both employers and regulating authorities in relation to migrant labour. This volume offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the structures and imaginaries underlying various forms of mobili…
Hosting Migrants in Kyoto City
Since the late 1980s, the population of Filipinas married to Japanese men has increased in Kyoto. Numerous women had initially entered Japan as entertainers, later found partners, and built families in the city. The growing numbers of resident Filipinas led to the organization of the local Pag-asa Filipino community. Considering migrants as city-makers, we explore how Filipina residents together with residents springing off earlier cohorts of mig…

Mixed' Japanese-Filipino identities under Japanese multiculturalism
The ways in which multiculturalism is debated and practiced forms an important frame for ‘mixed’ ethnic identities to take shape. In this paper, I explore how young migrants of Japanese-Filipino ‘mixed’ parentage make sense of their ethnic identities in Japan. My key findings are that dominant discourses constructing the Japanese nation as a monoracial, monolingual and monoethnic nation leave no space for diversity within the definition of ‘Japan…
Claiming Japaneseness
The intensification of migration between Japan and the Philippines since the 1970s has contributed to an increasing number of relationships and children born to Japanese men and Filipino women. In the Philippines, numerous children have grown up in the absence of their fathers and with limited social and cultural ties to Japan. Frequently, they are raised by their maternal families in cultural environments that are no different from environments …
