  • Pigeons, portals, and Pacman: Insightful problem solving and navigation using a touchscreen video game

    Open Access•Rafael S Rodrigues, Cyrus Kirkman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Experimental…•2026•References: 55

Video games have been used in several studies to investigate problem solving. We present empirical findings from a redesigned touchscreen navigation “grid‐world” procedure resembling the classic video game PacMan (hereafter, “pacman”) played by pigeons. Our objective was to develop a procedure to study insight, similar to that of Epstein et al. (1984). During Training Phase 1, pigeons learned to guide a virtual pacman across a touchscreen arena t…

  • The conjunction fallacy in rats

    Open Access•Valeria V González, Sowgol Sadeghi et al.•ARTICLE•Psychonomic Bulletin & Review•2023

Humans and other animals are capable of reasoning. However, there are overwhelming examples of errors or anomalies in reasoning. In two experiments, we studied if rats, like humans, estimate the conjunction of two events as more likely than each event independently, a phenomenon that has been called conjunction fallacy. In both experiments, rats learned through food reinforcement to press a lever under some cue conditions but not others. Sound B …

  • Calories count: Memory of eating is evolutionarily special

Open Access•Benjamin M Seitz, Aaron P Blaisdell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Memory and Language•2021

  • The comparative analysis of intelligence

    Mary Flaim, Aaron P Blaisdell•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2020

The study of intelligence in humans has been ongoing for over 100 years, including the underlying structure, predictive validity, related cognitive measures, and source of differences. One of the key findings in intelligence research is the uniform positive correlations among cognitive tasks. This has been replicated with every cognitive test battery in humans. Nevertheless, many other aspects of intelligence research have revealed contradictory …
