New Evidence About the Existence of a Bandwagon Effect in the Opinion Formation Process
This study undertakes an empirical test of the "bandwagon effect"—individuals rallying to the majority opinion. The study is done outside the electoral context on two issues: abortion and the constitutional future of Quebec. A panel is used, as well as an experimental design in which respondents are told the state and direction of public opinion. Bandwagoning and Underdoging on North-American Free Trade: A Quasi-Experimental Panel Study of Opinion Movement
A quasi-experimental panel methodology is used to measure opinion movements of student groups on North-American Free Trade. It is found that stimulation with regard to majority trends in public opinion produces both bandwagon and underdog effects on individual opinions. After controlling for various non causal factors, these effects are attributed partly to the stimuli and partly to mechanisms by which individuals try to maintain internal consist…

The purpose of this research is to confirm that there are different conceptions of equality in the United States, English Canada, and French Canada.Beginning with the Aristotelian distinction between numerical equality and proportional equality, the article establishes first a typology for the concept of equality.
