    Open Access•Andres Malamud, Leiv Marsteintredet•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Objective The purpose of this article is to explain how Peronism, an allegedly personalist party, has managed to institutionalize its internal power struggles and its succession procedures since democratization in 1983. Open Access•Leiv Marsteintredet•ARTICLE•European Review of Latin American…•2020•Cited by: 5

This article uses the political science literature on transitions to democracy to discuss the domestic challenges to a negotiated transition in Venezuela. This article discusses three key challenges to a negotiated outcome in Venezuela. The first is the current polit…

  • Coup with Adjectives: Conceptual Stretching or Innovation in Comparative Research

    Open Access•Leiv Marsteintredet, Andres Malamud•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2020•Cited by: 10•References: 52

Was Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff victim of a coup or removed through a legal process of impeachment? The heated debate on the 2016 ousting of Brazil’s president testifies to the growing controversy around the definition of coups. Focusing on Latin America, we show that the use of coups with adjectives have become more frequent in public and scholarly debates. Occurring at a time when coups are becoming rarer, we argue that this development i…

  • Allies and Traitors: Vice-Presidents in Latin America

    Open Access•Leiv Marsteintredet, Fredrik Uggla•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American Studies•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 16

Vice-presidents in Latin America have often been at the centre of political turbulence. To prevent conflicts within the executive, most Latin American countries have therefore put in place formulae to elect presidents and vice-presidents on a joint electoral ticket. Still, it is common for presidential candidates to pick running mates from other parties in order to construct alliances and appeal to a broader set of voters. But the presence of suc…

  • The European Political Science Agenda: A Multilevel Analysis from a Country Perspective

Open Access•Marcelo Camerlo, David Doyle et al.•ARTICLE•European Political Science•2017•References: 13

This presentation introduces the analytical framework applied in this symposium for the analysis of publishing trends of European political scientists. Our goal is to ascertain the degree to which the discipline in four contrasting countries (Ireland, Norway, Portugal and Spain) speaks to a wider European or international audience. Is political science insular in these countries, or is it internationalised? On which aspects are the publications s…

  • Paraguay and the Politics of Impeachment

    Open Access•Leiv Marsteintredet, Mariana Llanos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of democracy•2013•Cited by: 27•References: 4

On 22June 2012, President Fernando Lugo of Paraguay became the 16th president in a Latin American “third wave” democracy to not finish his term. Lugo was impeached in a hasty process approved by an overwhelming congressional majority. International reactions spearheaded by the South American left were condemnatory, labeling the impeachment an “institutional coup.” This article compares the Lugo impeachment to the other presidential breakdowns in …

  • Rendición de cuentas horizontal y preponderancia presidencial: Una combinación difícil. El caso de República Dominicana, 1967-2009

    Open Access•Leiv Marsteintredet•ARTICLE•AMÉRICA LATINA HOY•2011

  • Reducing the Perils of Presidentialism in Latin America through Presidential Interruptions

    Leiv Marsteintredet, Einar Berntzen•ARTICLE•Comparative Politics•2008•Cited by: 23•References: 3

Apresidential regime is defined by the independent origin and survival ofthe chiefexecutive and the legislature. The fixed electoral terms of the two popularly elected institutions led Linz to argue that presidentialism is a rigid regime that often creates political conflicts that the regime's institutions are unable to handle. Based primarily on Latin American evidence, Linz argued that such conflicts would cause the breakdown of democracy.' Sin…

The study applies a combination of simple statistical techniques and process tracing to test four institutional hypotheses, which argue that certain institutional and party system constellations increase the probability of deadlocks. The hypotheses point t…
