Cueva Palomera is the main entrance to the Ojo Guareña Karst System, one of the longest caves in Europe. Since 2016, the investigation of its main archaeological sites has recommenced with the goal of determining the chronological sequence of the occupation of the cave. After the publication of radiocarbon dates for Sala Cartón and the Sala de las Pinturas, and for the area of the Sala and Galería de las Huellas ( Ortega et al., 2020 , Ortega et …

  • Landscape evolution and the karst development in the Ojo Guareña multilevel cave system (Merindad de Sotoscueva, Burgos, Spain)

    Open Access•Theodoros Karampaglidis, Alfonso Benito-Calvo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

The Ojo Guareña karst system (OG) is located in the SE Cantabrian Range in northern Spain (Burgos, Spain). It is a multilevel cave system composed of 6 levels and is one of the longest cavities in the Iberian Peninsula (110 km). The spatial patterns and geomorphological characteristics of OG constitute a first-order record for studying the principal mechanisms of how the karst evolved by reconstruction and analysis of the external landscape. This…

  • A symbolic Neanderthal accumulation of large herbivore crania

    Open Access•Enrique Baquedano, J L Arsuaga et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2023•Cited by: 14•References: 71

This work examines the possible behaviour of Neanderthal groups at the Cueva Des-Cubierta (central Spain) via the analysis of the latter's archaeological assemblage. Alongside evidence of Mousterian lithic industry, Level 3 of the cave infill was found to contain an assemblage of mammalian bone remains dominated by the crania of large ungulates, some associated with small hearths. The scarcity of post-cranial elements, teeth, mandibles and maxill…

  • Prehistoric Human Tracks in Ojo Guareña Cave System (Burgos, Spain): The Sala and Galerías de las Huellas

    Open Access•Ana Isabel Ortega-Martínez, Ana I Ortega et al.•CHAPTER•Reading Prehistoric Human Tracks•2021

In 1969, members of Grupo Espeleológico Edelweiss discovered the Sala and Galerías de las Huellas in Ojo Guareña Cave system (Burgos, Spain). These contained hundreds of ancient human footprints, preserved in the soft sediment on the floor. These footprints represent the tracks of a small group of people who walked barefoot through these complex passages in the cave. Owing to the difficult compatibility of the documentation and preservation of th…

Here we present a new site in the Sierra de Atapuerca (Burgos, Spain): Galería de las Estatuas (GE), which provides new information about Mousterian occupations in the Iberian Plateau. The GE was an ancient entrance to the cave system, which is currently closed and sealed by a stalagmitic crust, below which a detritic sedimentary sequence of more than 2 m is found. This has been divided into five litostratigraphic units with a rich assemblage of …

In this paper we have applied the electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in order to prospect and to analyse the morphological and geological subsurface of the Torcas‐Cueva Mayor endokarst system (Sierra de Atapuerca). These works are essential to establish the development of the sedimentary infills where the Early and Middle Pleistocene archaeo‐palaeoanthropological sites of the Sierra de Atapuerca are located.
