  • Big Data in Industrial-Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management

Frederick L Oswald, Tara S Behrend et al.•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Organizational…•2019

Big data and artificial intelligence (AI) have become quite compelling—and relevant, ideally—to organizations and the consulting services that help manage them. Researchers and practitioners in industrial-organizational psychology (IOP) and human resource management (HRM) can add significant value to big data and AI by offering their substantive expertise in how workforce-relevant data are measured and analyzed and how big data results are profes…

  • Measuring Attraction to Organizations

Open Access•Scott Highhouse, Filip Lievens et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2003

Organizational attractionmeasures are commonly used as surrogate assessments of organizational pursuit. Despite the range in content often encompassed by such instruments, no research has systematically examined the assumptions underlying their use. The authors address this issue by empirically distinguishing items assessing attractiveness, prestige, and behavioral intentions and by modeling their effects on organization pursuit. Undergraduates (…

  • Issues and Strategies for Reducing the Length of Self‐report Scales

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Stanton, Evan F Sinar et al.•ARTICLE•Personnel Psychology•2002

Greater understanding of the complex interrelationships among work‐relevant constructs has increased the number of constructs on organizational surveys. Good psychometric practice also dictates the use of multiple items per construct. The net result has been longer surveys. Longer surveys take more time to complete, tend to have more missing data, and have higher refusal rates than short surveys. Arguably, then, techniques for reducing the length…

  • Development of a Compact Measure of Job Satisfaction

    Open Access•Jeffrey M Stanton, Evan F Sinar et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2002

The Job Descriptive Index is a popular measure of job satisfaction with five subscales containing 72 items. A national sample ( n = 1,534) and a sample of university workers ( n = 636) supported development of an abridged version of the Job Descriptive Index (AJDI) containing a total of 25 items. A systematic scale-reduction technique was employed with the first sample to decide which items to retain in each scale. The abridged subscales were the…

  • Primary and Secondary Control Over Age‐Related Changes in Physical Appearance

    Open Access•Suzanne C Thompson, Craig W Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•1998

Beliefs about appearance‐related changes due to aging were used to test the effects of perceived control and secondary control (acceptance) in a sample of 412 young, early‐middle‐age, and late‐middle‐age college‐educated adults. Mean difference in aging‐related appearance control and hypotheses regarding the adaptiveness of primary and secondary control were examined. Primary control over aging‐related appearance was lower in older adults and sec…
