Selected Tree Species for Sustainable Harvest and Calculating Their Sustainable Harvesting Quota in Tshanini Conservation Area, Maputaland, South Africa
The process of calculating a sustainable harvesting quota for tree species is presented for the Sand Forest and Woodlands of Tshanini Conservation Area. The study area lies within the Maputaland Centre of Plant Endemism, in South Africa, which is threatened by human utilization outside conservation areas. In a defined harvesting area in the Sand Forest and Woodland communities the concept of species grain was first used to establish which species…
Hardwood Utilization in Rural Households of the Mankakulane Community, Maputaland, South Africa
An analysis of the structure and composition of household buildings in the rural community of Manqakulane, Maputaland, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is presented. This biodiversity- rich area forms part of the Maputaland Centre of Plant Endemism, currently under threat from land transformation and human utilisation outside conservation areas. The demand for natural resources as building material by people of the community is evaluated through a su…
The development of secondary industries through the sustainable utilisation of reeds and forest timber in the Tembe Elephant Park, Maputaland, South Africa
The harvesting of Phragmites australis reeds in the Tembe Elephant Park has to be managed pro-actively. Solutions to potential problems should be sought before they arise. This paper offers a potential solution to the problem of instating a winter-only reed harvest in the Muzi Swamp. The potential for manufacturing finished products such as prefabricated huts from sustainably harvested reeds and forest timber is examined and a cost estimate is pr…
Questionnaires Do Not Work! A Comparison of Methods Used to Evaluate the Structure of Buildings and Wood Used in Rural Households, South Africa
The level of hardwood utilisation for house building was evaluated in a rural community of Maputaland, KwaZulu- Natal, South Africa. A full inventory of 42 households in that community was conducted, followed by a questionnaire survey coupled with a partial inventory of the same households. It was expected that the questionnaire design would be greatly improved by the prior survey, and that similar quantitative results could be obtained. The resu…
Management of the old field vegetation in the Namaqua National Park, South Africa
Springtime mass displays of wild flowers are especially prominent on old fields and other disturbed sites in Namaqualand, an arid region in the north-western part of South Africa. This springtime floral spectacle draws thousands of tourists annually. However, there is a potential conflict between biodiversity conservation and the mass flowering that is a valuable source of income to the region. To develop a management plan for the old field veget…
