Longitudinal effect of parental technoference on adolescents’ school engagement
Longitudinal Association Between Parental Technoference and Adolescent Academic Burnout
Technoference, the disruptions in parent−child communication caused by parental mobile device overuse, has been linked to academic burnout in adolescents. However, the specific effects of technoference on adolescent academic burnout remain underexplored. This study, based on family systems theory, expectation violation theory, and the conservation of resources theory, investigates the longitudinal impact of parental technoference on adolescent ac…
Tobacco Use, Experiences and Knowledge Among Indigenous Mexican Agricultural Workers
The unique culture and languages of Indigenous Mexican immigrants to the United States, a substantial portion of the nation’s agricultural workforce, has limited participation of this population in tobacco and other health related research. Our established community-academic team [Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP) and UCLA] developed and conducted a community survey (n = 200) from February – October 2024, in Spanish (n = 145),…
Reciprocal multilingual awareness for linguistic citizenship
In this paper, we build on southern and decolonial theories of multilingualism and invite a south-north conversation through a concept we propose as 'reciprocal multilingual awareness'. Reciprocity is a core value of southern societies that balance pluralities of episteme, language, and communality. Central features of southern multilingualisms, including transknowledging (reciprocal exchanges and translation of knowledge), and linguistic citizen…
Facilitators and Challenges to Health Promotion in Black and Latino Churches
Multilingualism, translanguaging and transknowledging
Key findings, analysis and recommendations that have emerged from a research project, ‘Using Human Language Technology to enhance academic integrity, inclusivity, knowledge exchange, student diversity and retention’ at the University of South Australia conducted in 2019 are discussed in this article. The primary purpose of the project was to address some of the challenges and opportunities afforded by increasing student and teacher diversity at a…

Organizational readiness for wellness promotion – a survey of 100 African American church leaders in South Los Angeles
Many churches in South Los Angeles are actively engaged in health promotion activities, despite a general lack of resources. We recommend a comprehensive assessment of church characteristics in intervention studies to enable the use of strategies (e.g., stratification by size) that reduce imbalances that could mask or magnify study outcomes. Our data provide empirical support for the inner settings construct of the Consolidated Framework for Impl…
