  • Soil Microbiological Approaches to Reconstruction of the Purpose of Ancient Settlements Construction

    Open Access•Alexandr Borisov, Alexander V Borisov et al.•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2023

The aim of the article is reconstruction of purpose of ancient settlements construction using a combination of chemical and microbiological indicators. The study object is the Bagai-1 settlement of the Late Bronze Age in the northwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula. The chemical and microbiological properties of the occupation layer within the buildings of various shapes and sizes in different parts of the site have been studied. It was establi…

  • Reconstruction of Original Content of the Kurgan Funeral Vessels Based on Microbial and Enzymatic Parameters

    Open Access•Natalia Kashirskaya, N N Kashirskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2023

The original content of ritual vessels from the burials of the two kurgan cemeteries was reconstructed using the multisubstrate testing system of microbial respiration and enzymatic activity of the soil from the pots. For this purpose, a laboratory model experiment was conducted and the decomposition of protein, lipid and polysaccharide organic materials was studied. Basing on the results of the model experiment, most indicative enzymes produced …

  • Microbiological Approaches to the Detection of Fat in Ritual Vessels From Ancient Burials

Open Access•Natalia Kashirskaya, Natalia Nicolaevna Kashirskaya et al.•ARTICLE•History Archeology and…•2023

Lipolytic bacteria are practically not detected in ordinary soils, but their number can increase significantly if fats enter the soil. To identify the initial presence of fats in the composition of ritual food, an assessment of the number of lipolytic bacteria in the soils of 64 vessels from the burials of the Early Medieval time of the North Caucasus was carried out. Microbiological analyses were conducted in samples from the bottom layer of ves…

  • Paleoecological Conditions in the Steppe Zone of the Eastern European Plain at the Post-Catacomb Time

Open Access•Alexandr Borisov, Natalia Kashirskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Nizhnevolzhskiy Arheologicheskiy…•2022

The article is devoted to reconstruction of paleoecological conditions of the steppe zone of the Eastern European Plain in the late Middle Bronze Age. The buried soils of the Kurgan of the Babinskaya culture in the Bogucharsky district of the Voronezh region were studied. It is shown that chemical properties of soil are determined by winter precipitation, while the state of its microbial community reflects the moisture content in the warm season.…

  • Double Corrals - New Sites of the Bronze Age in the North-West Crimea and Their Study by Geophysical, Geochemical and Microbiological Methods

T N Smekalova, Fedor Lisetskii et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2021

In the course of systematic exploration in 2007-2020, using natural-scientific approaches, more than 50 new settlements of the Bronze Age were discovered and investigated in North-West Crimea, for which borders, layouts were determined, and individual building complexes were identified. This became possible only with the use of an interdisciplinary methodology that combines the analysis of satellite images, magnetic survey and selective excavatio…

  • Magnetic surveys locate Late Bronze Age corrals

    Open Access•T N Smekalova, Bruce W Bevan et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 6

A new type of livestock enclosure from the Late Bronze Age has been discovered. Stone walls outline a pair of circular or oval areas that may be up to 50 m in diameter. The stone walls are invisible at the surface; they were discovered in north‐western Crimea and only with the aid of remote sensing and geophysical surveys. In the period 2007–2020, over two dozen of these structures were found; none has ever been noted before. The locations of the…

  • Precipitation pattern during warm and cold periods in the Bronze Age (around 4.5-3.8 ka BP) in the desert steppes of Russia

    Open Access•T E Khomutova, Natalia Kashirskaya et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2019

  • An assessment of changes in properties of steppe kurgan paleosoils in relation to prevailing climates over recent millennia

    Open Access•T E Khomutova, Т С Демкина et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

Comparative analysis of morphological and chemical properties of the soil chronosequence on Kastanozems soils in the steppe zone of the Russian Plain, which included paleosoils buried beneath kurgans erected ca. 2000 BC, AD 50, AD 200, and AD 1250 was performed to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions in this archeologically important region. Paleoenvironmental dynamics were traced using the state of microbial communities of paleo and mod…
