Be Our (Uninvited) Guest. Experiences and Challenges of International Doctoral Students in the Czech Republic
While extensive research addresses the working conditions of international Ph.D. students in Western countries, only little explores their experiences within Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. CEE countries favour masculine values, hierarchical structures and conservatism, and English does not serve as a primary language in both academic and non‐academic contexts. This study, involving seventeen international Ph.D. students in the Czec…
The romantic relationships of marginalised Roma youth as a gradual process of emancipation from communal constraints
This article explores the cultural meanings of romantic relationships among youth in excluded Roma settlements in Slovakia. Moving beyond pathologising narratives on early pregnancy and domestic violence, we centre the voices of 24 Roma young people aged 18-22, using constructivist qualitative analysis and member-checking with three participants. Through analysis, we created four themes. The first (Grown-up in a Day) frames romantic relationships…
Learning through romantic experiences
This research introduces the Romantic Relationship-Induced Learning Scale (RRILS), designed to measure personal growth, learning, and positive change stemming from romantic and intimate experiences among adults. The RRILS was developed using a triangulation approach, beginning with qualitative responses to generate thematic domains and an item pool, followed by expert validation. This 15-item measure identified three core dimensions of romantic r…
I Learned My Lesson
It is known from research that romantic relationships may, under certain circumstances, serve as a training ground benefiting subsequent relational experiences and development. This longitudinal multiple‐case study focuses on the previously unexplored area of the course and processes of individuals’ perceived romantic relationship‐induced learning (RRIL) and positive change over time. Four young women participated in in‐depth interviews twice, wi…
All Is Well in Moderation
Considerable research confirms that romantic relationships and their quality are one of the top priorities in the lives of individuals, especially as they enter the emerging adulthood stage. It is indisputably relevant to revisit relationship quality factors in research, even though there is generally plenty of interest in this topic across the research literature. The present study concerns the antecedents of relationship quality in a research-e…
A misfortune or a benefit? Young people’s quality of life and romantic relationships during the Covid-19 pandemic
The Covid-19 pandemic has brought unexpected changes in important aspects of young people’s lives. The academic literature contains many studies on the risks and adverse effects, while any potential positive aspects have been side-lined. This paper examines quality of life and relationships among young people in emerging and young adulthood in order to identify the negatives and benefits of the pandemic. In this qualitative research a “letter to …
The other side of the coin
There is certainly no shortage of studies describing the unwanted effects of infidelity in the relevant literature. By contrast, this paper examines the previously unexplored face of infidelity – namely, the subjectively perceived positive effects. One hundred and four participants from Slovakia in emerging and/or young adulthood shared their relationship history through semi-structured interviews (transcribed verbatim). Sixty-nine of these were …
Happiness as an aim of education
This paper explores happiness as an aim of education, particularly schooling. What role does happiness play in philosophy of education? How do critics view the aims of public schooling today and its relation to happiness? Is happiness embedded in the concept of education as an aim of education? The paper explores happiness—understood inclusively as a positive mental state—by examining the relevant literature from various disciplines. It looks bri…
Why is happiness research not an entirely positive phenomenon
