Swidden Counts: A Petén, Guatemala, Milpa System
The traditional swidden (milpa) system practiced in Petén, Guatemala (in the southern Maya subtropical moist lowlands) closely resembles pre-Spanish conquest milpa farming. Evidence suggests that the Petenero milpa (a type of agroforesty)—based on 1:6-year crop:fallow cycles and two harvests/plot/year—is sustainable across time, does not deplete the resource base, is compatible with biodiversity conservation, and enables one farm family to produc…
Traditional Home Gardens Of Petén, Guatemala: Resource Management, Food Security, And Conservation
Conservation and development agencies in Petén, Guatemala have been promoting home gardens among migrant families in order to improve the welfare of these families and to conserve natural resources. The agencies have not been successful. However, native Peteneros do have a productive gardening system that is compatible with resource conservation. This essay describes the structure, management, and economic and social benefits of 23 traditional Pe…
Caminos en la selva: Migración, comercio y resistencia. Mayas yucatecos e itzaes, siglos XVIII-XIX
Laura Caso Barerra has synthesized an enormous amount of material in this detailed account of how diverse sectors of Spanish colonial society extracted labor from the Maya of Yucatán. The Maya resisted in many ways, including flight to remote rural areas and to the independent Itza Maya confederation located in the forests of Petén, far south of Yucatán. Caso Barrera argues that escaping excessive labor demands was the major reason for flight, bu…

The author contends that for 250 years, roughly from the 1720s to the 1970s, the sociocultural system of Petén endured with remarkable continuity, not in spite of the changes in the hinterland region but, to an important degree, because of them.

Cooperatively Managed Projects and Rapid Assessment: Suggestions from a Panamanian Case
There are occasions when development personnel must rapidly select community sites for a project. This creates a need for valid, concrete and low cost (in terms of time, personnel and resources) rapid assessment methods which should also be unobtrusive to avoid hurting the interests and feelings of groups being considered for the project. This paper suggests that a community service assessment technique can serve the purposes of rapid assessment,…
Colonization of Northern Guatemala: The Petén
In Guatemala an autonomous state agency controls colonization of tropical Petén. Although dependency theorists argue that Petén colonization operates within a context of dependent capitalist development and therefore "fails," that is, benefits elites but not lower sectors, they have not presented statistics on land distribution in Petén. Further, dependency theorists tend to treat local institutions and local groups as passive in colonization pro…
Integrated Aquacultural Development: Sociological Issues in the Cooperative Management of Community Fishponds
Group farming is an approach to aquacultural development where a relatively small number of individuals or families elect to produce fish as a collectively adopted activity. Cooperatively managed farm enterprises depend on various coordination mechanisms to initiate and sustain the production process. The paper examines selected structural and situational factors that affect decision making and continued operation of community-managed fish ponds.…

The structural context of religious conversion in Petén, Guatemala: Status, Community, and Multicommunity1
Why do some people change their religious affiliations, with all this may imply for family and community relations? Why are some communities more receptive than others to religious innovation? Are there any patterned relationships among social position, group organization, and community culture which help account for intra- and intercommunity variation in religious conversion? In Latin America, one area for investigating these questions is the co…

Goal Attainment Through Factionalism: A Guatemalan Case1
Until recently, anthropologists have tended to stress the negative aspects of factionalism. In a northern Guatemalan town, San Andrés, factional conflicts have had positive consequences for the attainment of sectarian and community political goals. The starting point is an examination of the units between which conflict occurs, the factions. This approach directs attention to the functions factions may have for a social group. Three empirical fac…

A Pragmatic Past: Folk history, environmental change, and society in a Petén, Guatemala town
Over a fifteen year period (1960-1975), folk historians in a Petén, Guatemala town have revised their conceptualizations of the past without revising their reports of the facts as such. Simultaneously, a series of rapid changes in the demographic, economic, and political environment of the town has occurred. The connections between these two sets of changes are explored to show that the folk history has changed in response to the changing environ…
