Moving pictures: Memory and photography among the Arhuaco of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia
This article traces the changing uses and meanings of a set of ethnographic photographs that represent a contentious period in the history of the Arhuaco, an indigenous group that inhabits the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in Northern Colombia. Based on archival sources and fieldwork, I explore their role in the 1910s when they were created by Swedish anthropologist Gustaf Bolinder, and also analyse indigenous re-significations and contests over …
Indigenous State Making on the Frontier: Arhuaco Politics in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia, 1900-1920
This article examines the ways in which, during the early decades of the twentieth century, Arhuaco leaders of the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia turned to the state to legitimize and move forward their claims. By so doing, they made the state a real presence in an area that has been thought of as a frontier characterized by the state's absence. I explore Arhuaco interactions with the government and nonindigenous …
La Colombie Et La France: Relations Culturelles XIXe-XXe Siècles
This book approaches the history of foreign relations between France and Colombia from the perspective of cultural exchange in a welcome effort to extend our understanding of international relations beyond diplomatic treaties and commercial ties. Margot Andrade argues that French influence in Colombia since the late eighteenth century has been very extensive and, in her words, “fecund” (p. 14). She sets out to explore its impact in areas such as …

This article demonstrates the ways in which cultural analysis can contribute to the historiography of twentieth-century Colombia, particularly the 1930s and 1940s and the period of the República Liberal. With this goal in mind, and from a Latin American perspective, it reclaims for cultural history the work of authors we consider precursors and examines texts that have shaped the field. First, we outline the partisan historiography that first exa…
