  • Education, Income and Mobility: Experimental Impacts of Childhood Exposure to Progresa after 20 Years

    María Caridad Araujo, Karen Macours•REPORT•2021

In 1997, the Mexican government designed the conditional cash transfer program Progresa, which became the worldwide model of a new approach to social programs, simultaneously targeting human capital accumulation and poverty reduction. A large literature has documented the short and medium-term impacts of the Mexican program and its successors in other countries. Using Progresas experimental evaluation design originally rolled out in 1997-2000, an…

  • Observing home‐visiting quality at scale with the home visit rating scales and a supervisor checklist in Peru

    Open Access•Marta Rubio‐Codina, Marta Dormal et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 5

As home‐visiting programs expand, there is a need to develop cost‐effective tools to monitor their quality at scale. We compare the Home Visit Rating Scales (HOVRS), an instrument to measure home‐visit process quality widely used in the United States, to a checklist designed for the Peruvian national home‐visiting program, Cuna Mas. Both instruments were administered to a sample of 554 home visits and an equal number of mother–child dyads by thei…

  • Teacher Quality and Learning Outcomes in Kindergarten

María Caridad Araujo, Pedro Carneiro et al.•ARTICLE•The Quarterly Journal of Economics•2016

We assigned two cohorts of kindergarten students, totaling more than 24,000 children, to teachers within schools with a rule that is as good as random. We collected data on children at the beginning of the school year and applied 12 tests of math, language, and executive function (EF) at the end of the year. All teachers were filmed teaching for a full day, and the videos were coded using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (or CLASS). We fin…

  • Wealth Gradients in Early Childhood Cognitive Development in Five Latin American Countries

Norbert Schady, Jere R Behrman et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Human Resources•2015

Research from the United States shows that gaps in early cognitive and non-cognitive ability appear early in the life cycle. Little is known about this important question for developing countries. This paper provides new evidence of sharp differences in cognitive development by socioeconomic status in early childhood for five Latin American countries. To help with comparability, we use the same measure of receptive language ability for all five c…
