Straddling Three Waters
Ras Al-Hadd HD-2, a low marine terrace at the entrance to the Al-Hajar lagoon on the easternmost cape of the Arabian Peninsula, was excavated in 2016 as a rescue intervention ahead of tourism development. Despite severe post-depositional disturbance, the site preserves coherent activity surfaces within a thin, compressed stratigraphy spanning the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age (ca. 4500–2000 b.c.). Technological conservatism in core reductio…
Fish in Lower Mesopotamia
This paper investigates the role of fish and fishing equipment in Lower Mesopotamia between the 6th and 3rd millennia BCE. By combining evidence from faunal remains with artifacts related to fishing practices, it explores how aquatic resources were integrated into subsistence, economic strategies, and cultural expressions. Materials from several major sites are considered in relation to their environmental and archaeological contexts, with partic…
The Easternmost Outpost of the Hadramawt Kingdom
This paper presents the results of the first archaeological investigation at Andhūr (DMa0610), an inland site in the Wādī Andhūr oasis, Dhofar, southern Oman. Excavations revealed a multi‐phase occupation dated to the second part of the first century BCE , centred on a two‐storey building constructed with the ‘sandwich’ masonry technique known from Sumhuram. Architectural and environmental evidence suggest that Andhūr served as a small Hadrami ou…
Sheep and Goat Variability along the Edges of the Al-Hajar Mountains in the Prehistory of South-east Arabia
The Al-Hajar Mountains, spanning the Sultanate of Oman and the United Arab Emirates along the Sea of Oman, have hosted human settlement since prehistory. Over the past three decades, numerous archaeological sites have been investigated in this region. Findings from these sites reveal significant human impact on the landscape from the Early Bronze Age to the Late Iron Age, evidenced by complex settlements and extensive burial grounds. This study s…
Exploring Neolithic resilience and mobility in the Omani interior at Al-Khashbah KHS-A
A newly discovered Neolithic site at Al-Khashbah KHS-A (Oman) reveals local adaptations to climate change in the Holocene. Results from radiocarbon dating show repeated occupations over 1000 years and key artefacts indicate coastal connections. KHS-A served as a short-term camp, enhancing our understanding of Neolithic lifeways in Arabia
The first investigation of an Iron Age shell midden in Oman
Testing osteometric species determination on zooarchaeological dolphin remains from Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age sites in Ash-Sharqiyyah, Sultanate of Oman
Different Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age sites located in the Ras al-Hadd cape and Ras al-Jinz Bay area (Ash-Sharqiyyah South Governorate, Sultanate of Oman) have provided thousands of zooarchaeological dolphin remains suggesting a strong reliance on the exploitation of these animals. Dolphins are hard to identify to the species level due to a highly comparable interspecies osteological morphology as well as a general lack of extensive osteo…
The food of the dead
The presence of animal bones in human graves may often represent the ritual deposition of alimentary offerings for the dead. In fact, several ancient cultures believed in the perpetuation of earthly life activities and necessities in the\nafterlife. This essay presents the methodological aspects and the results of the archaeozoological analyses carried out on the 39 graves examined so far in the Etruscan-Celtic necropolis of Monterenzio Vecchio (…
