A ‘Simple Life’ as a ‘Good Life’?: Insights from Cuban and Ecuadorian Return Migration
This article examines the moral deliberations and value-creation strategies of Cuban and Ecuadorian return migrants who question the common-sense view that upward social mobility drives migration and strive to reimagine life in their homeland accordingly. By reassessing notions of virtuous economic practice and activating moral repertoires outside the field of migration, returnees attempt to carve out a ‘simple life’ oriented toward frugality, mo…
Rethinking Migration beyond the Analytics of Suffering
In their search for better lives, migrants encounter numerous hardships. Structural violence, inequality, and precarity have long been central to migration research, but an exclusive focus on these dimensions risks narrowing the anthropological imagination and overlooking the reasons why many move in the first place. The contributions to this special issue examine how migrants navigate moral dilemmas and pursue meaningful lives by reflecting on v…

Comparative moves: "The Pursuit of Value and Belonging in Transnational Migration Toward a "Better Life
Moving beyond comparison as a method that juxtaposes community-based case studies, this article explores how migrants with different backgrounds and trajectories themselves deploy comparison in their everyday lives and decision-making. To do so, it examines Cuban and Ecuadorian migrants' comparative appraisal of different places, values, and visions of a "better life", shedding new light on the motives, stakes, and effects of their endeavors. The…
Identifying Indigenous people: Visual appearance, filiation, and the experience of race in an "Indigenous" soccer championship and in everyday life in Otavalo, Ecuador
While Indigenous/mestizo distinction in Latin Americanist anthropology has been mainly thought of as a cultural and/or socioeconomic demarcation, I argue that a conceptualization in terms of race offers some valuable insights. Starting from a soccer championship in the Otavalo region of Ecuador, I show how otavaleño Indigenous people's historical and current experiences of racialization have shaped the criteria that they consider relevant to iden…
Assembling 'indigeneity' through musical practices: Translocal circulations, 'tradition', and place in Otavalo (Ecuadorian Andes)
This article addresses the relation between Andean 'traditional music' and circulations of people, objects, ideas and sounds. Although many studies on Andean indigenous music have explored such circulations, scholars still tend to understand musical practices in terms of 'cultures'. The case of indigenous music from Otavalo, in the Ecuadorian Andes, encourages us to go beyond this approach. I make two arguments. First, by conceiving of the transl…
Remittances and morality: Family Obligations, Development, and the Ethical Demands of Migration
Remittances have moral dimensions that, albeit implicitly addressed in migration literature, have not yet been the focus of explicit attention and analysis by social scientists. Building on recent developments in the anthropology of ethics and morality, this article proposes theoretical and analytical pathways to address this important but often neglected aspect of remittances. It does so mainly via a critical analysis of existing scholarship on …
Sonic ethnography: Identity, heritage and creative research practice in Basilicata, southern Italy
Sonic ethnography explores the role of sound-making and listening practices in the formation of local identities in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. The book uses a combination of text, photography and sound recording to investigate soundful cultural performances such as tree rituals, carnivals, pilgrimages, events promoting cultural heritage and more informal musical performances. Its approach demonstrates how in the acoustic domain tr…
