    Open Access•Marjeta Pisk, Anja Moric•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2025•References: 26

The introductory article examines the processes of creating, using, and interpreting heritage in diverse multicultural settings. Special attention is given to exploring the creative and performative power of heritage in minority, linguistically diverse, post-imperial, post-socialist, and other multicultural environments, where heritage functions as a dynamic field of negotiation, contestation, and connection

  • Singing out Strange Days

    Open Access•Marjeta Pisk•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnology and…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 32

In Slovenia, group singing played an important role in times of political change and crisis. It was deliberately used in times of uncertainty, when there was a greater need for cohesion, such as during the First World War, the Second World War and the Covid-19 pandemic. The songs that were most widely used at a given time reflected the emotional needs and desires of people in precarious situations. With the advent of new technologies, new modalit…

The article seeks to provide insight into the process of establishing Slovenia’s oldest folklore festival named Jurjevanje in the town of Črnomelj through a discursive approach. Focused on the Zeleni Jurij (Green George) ritual as the basis of the festival, the article captures the local discourse and explores the festival’s historical development and its connection to broader folklore festivalisation in Slovenia. Key events in the 1930s related …

  • ‘Un bel moretto’: Linguistic Interweavings in Songs from the Primorska Region

    Open Access•Marjeta Pisk•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2023

“Lan sem biu u Gorici” (Last Year I was in Gorizia) is the most frequently transcribed bilingual song in which Slovenian and Italian dialect texts are interwoven. Unlike variants from Goriška Brda and Venetian Slovenia, where the song has largely been forgotten, the variants in Istria are experiencing a revival and are referred to as typical Istrian songs. The article traces the meandering transitions between different linguistic variants and loc…

  • Folklore: Memories, Politics, Heritagisation

    Open Access•Rebeka Kunej, Marjeta Pisk•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2023

Despite many similarities, the understanding and treatment of the folklore movement differs between the various post-socialist countries, both in the conceptualisation of the phenomenon and in the vocabulary used. This paper presents different examples of the practices of the folklore (revival) movement in post-socialist countries. Both memory and auto-ethnographic studies are included

Open Access•Špela Ledinek Lozej, Marjeta Pisk•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2021

The municipalities in Brda/Collio are working to nominate the cultural landscape of this area for the UNESCO World Heritage List. The …

    Open Access•Marjeta Pisk, Katarina Šrimpf Vendramin•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The article focuses on short folklore forms recorded in the Gorica Hills (slv. Goriška brda) in the 20th and early 21st centuries, which can be considered as non-linguistic or non-ethnically bound folklore features. The language of these folklore forms is a mixture of the dialectal forms of the contact languages (Slovene, Italian, partly Friulian). Using the examples of the collected material, we analyse in which genres of the short folklore form…

    Marjeta Pisk•ARTICLE•Acta Ethnographica Hungarica•2020•References: 2

The trajectories of social actions comprising nature conservation and regional economic development in the Slovenian-Austrian-Hungarian tri-border area discussed in this paper are closely linked to the landscape of the Slovenian-Austrian-Hungarian border. Processual understanding bounds landscape to human activities and other non-human agents, all of whom constitute the landscape-in-the-making. The Őrség National Park and Goričko Landscape Park, …

    Open Access•Marjeta Pisk•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2019

  • Folk-Song Research - Between Text and Context

    Open Access•Marjeta Pisk•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 6

    Open Access•Marjeta Pisk•ARTICLE•Traditiones•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 2

In the program of the Committee for the Collection of Slovenian Folk Songs, the Princely County of Gorizia and Gradisca was poorly represented in the songs transcribed. The small number of transcriptions was partly the result of inactivity on the part of committee member Ivan Kokošar, but even more so due to changes in how folk songs were valued in that region as the consequence of the activity of the choirs of the reading rooms and societies. **…
