  • Global Inequality of Opportunity in Education Decreased During the 20th Century

Open Access•Michael Grätz, Mobarak Hossain et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2026•Referencias: 25

We document changes in global inequality of opportunity in education for women and men born between 1941 and 1983, using individual‐level census and survey data on 46.7 million individuals from 95 countries, representing all major regions of the world. We measure global inequality of opportunity in education as inequality in education due to circumstances beyond the control of individuals. In addition to gender and social origin, we treat a perso…

  • Primary factors in intergenerational social class mobility

    Open Access•M Beretta•ARTICLE•European Societies•2025

Past research has extensively examined trends in relative rates of intergenerational social class mobility in 20th century Western Europe. However, less attention has been given to how patterns of social fluidity may have changed over time. This study addresses this gap by analyzing trends in the social fluidity pattern and its sources, their cross-national commonalities, and their implications for inequalities in relative mobility chances, using…

  • Intergenerational Educational Mobility During the Twentieth Century

    Open Access•Mobarak Hossain, M Beretta•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2025•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 39

Intergenerational educational mobility, capturing the extent to which children's education is associated with their parents' education, has become a major global policy discussion. Studying its long-term patterns across countries remains difficult, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), due to limited early twentieth-century data. Analyzing about 53.7 million observations from 92 countries, using mainly IPUMS census data, we find…

  • Isonymy and the genetic structure of Switzerland. II. Isolation by distance

Open Access•Alvaro Rodríguez-Larralde, Chiara Scapoli et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1998

Isolation by distance in Switzerland was detected comparing the surname distributions between Cantons. The decay of isonymy with geographic distance between Cantons was consistent with Malecot's exponential decay of kinship. Lasker's distance was defined as the negative value of the logarithm of isonymy between localities, and it was found that it is linearly and significantly correlated with the log of geographic distance, both within and betwee…

  • Correlations between Isonymy Parameters

    Open Access•Chiara Scapoli, Alvaro Rodríguez-Larralde et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1997•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 1

Several parameters of genetic and anthropological interest are commonly estimated in the analysis of the surnames' distribution in human populations. Among these parameters, the most important for population structure is unbiased Isonymy, equivalent to 4 times the value of Fst, the random component of inbreeding in a group. Fisher's α estimates the wealth of surnames in a group, and Karlin-McGregorv is considered proportional to migration rates. …

  • Isonymy and the genetic structure of Switzerland I. The distributions of surnames

Open Access•I Barrai, Chiara Scapoli et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1996

The surname distribution of the population of Switzerland was studied using a sample of 1,702,000 private users registered for the year 1994 in the Helvetic Telephone Directory. These users were distributed in four linguistic areas, in 26 Cantons and 271 Communes of the Confederation. Estimates of unbiased random isonymy, of Fisher's alpha, an indicator of abundance of surnames converging to the allele effective number in standard genetic polymor…

  • Microevolution in Perugia

Open Access•Alvaro Rodríguez-Larralde, Giovanni Formica et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

The distribution of surnames in the population of the Comune of Perugia, as it existed in the memory banks of the Municipality Computer in autumn 1991, was studied by age and place of birth. Fisher's α and Karlin-McGregor's v were estimated in the total population, in persons born before 1901, and in persons born in the nine decades thereafter, ending with the period 1981–1991, for immigrants and for natives of Perugia, respectively. The wealth o…

  • Isonymy in records of births and deaths in Ferrara

Open Access•I Barrai, Chiara Scapoli et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1991

Surname distributions were studied in records of male and female births in Ferrara in the period 1982–89, and in records of male and female deaths in the same period. Average year of birth and standard deviation was 1985±2·3 for the birth series, and 1912±14·4 for the death series. Then the surname distributions, in two independent samples at an average distance of 73 years, were compared. It was observed that random isonymy within series, which …

  • Isonymy in emigrants from Ferrara in 1981–1988

Open Access•I Barrai, Giovanni Formica et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1990

The distribution of surnames in the emigrants from the population of the town of Ferrara in the period 1981-88 was studied by sex and place of birth, namely Ferrara versus other places. Emigrants born in Ferrara were defined as first time emigrants and those who had previously immigrated to Ferrara were defined second time emigrants. It was found that random isonymy is smaller in second time emigrants. Sex ratio is not different in the two types …

  • Migration pattern and genetic marker distribution of the Afro-American population of Bluefields, Nicaragua

Open Access•G Biondi, G Battistuzzi et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1988

On a sample of the population of mixed African ancestry living in Bluefields, Nicaragua, the pattern of migration and the distribution of red cell and serum genetic markers have been studied. It is concluded that, in spite of a considerable level of internal and external migration, a distinctive genetic structure is maintained by the population. Moreover, a strongly negative assortative mating can be observed between people inhabiting the western…

  • Surnames in ferrara

Open Access•I Barrai, Guido Barbujani et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1987

The distributions of surnames in populations of small and large towns are almost exactly linearized by a log-log transformation. This indicates probable fit of genetic models to most such distributions, even when the number of surnames is very large. Genetic parameters can then be conveniently calculated from surname distributions. It was found that inbreeding indicators calculated from isonymy are negatively correlated with the size of the towns…

  • A cline for glyoxalase I allele frequencies in Italy

Open Access•M Beretta, Paola Mazzetti et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1986

A gradient of glyoxalase I allele frequencies is described in Italian populations. The association between longitude and allele frequency is assessed through simple and multiple correlation, and gene flow is suggested as a major factor in the origin of such a pattern
