  • Crafting Democratic Futures

Open Access•Kamri Hudgins, Erykah Benson et al.•ARTICLE•RSF The Russell Sage Foundation…•2024•Cited by: 1

As a growing number of states and municipalities consider reparative policies for Black Americans, it is important to understand what shapes support for and opposition to these policies. We explore the role that awareness of racial inequality plays in shaping attitudes. Drawing on data from a large, representative survey in Detroit and one national survey, we find that awareness of racial inequality plays a powerful role in the likelihood of supp…

  • By Any Means Necessary? How Black and White Americans Evaluate Protest Tactics in Response to a Police Killing

Open Access•Les Mclaren, Zoe Walker•ARTICLE•The Journal of Race Ethnicity and…•2024•References: 27

The majority of protests in support of racial justice are peaceful. However, since the racial reckoning of 2020, there has been debate about when and how exposure to violent or disruptive protest activities can shift public opinion towards a social movement. Using the Black Lives Matter Movement as a lens, we design a survey experiment to test the causal effects of different protest tactics on support for protesters and the movement itself among …

  • A Sensibility of Humour

    Open Access•Zoe Walker•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Aesthetics•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 16

What does it say about you if you enjoy sexist humour? One answer to this question holds that finding sexist humour funny reveals that you have sexist beliefs, whilst another holds that it reveals nothing deeper about you at all. I argue that neither of these answers are correct, as neither can capture the feeling of unwilling complicity we often get from enjoying sexist jokes. Rather, we should navigate between these two positions by understandi…

  • Just Kidding? Two Roles for the Concept of Joking in Political Speech

    Open Access•Zoe Walker•ARTICLE•The Philosophical Quarterly•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In this paper, I discuss two roles for the concept of joking in political speech. First, I discuss how claiming to have been joking can provide speakers with a powerful form of deniability. I argue that the aesthetic dimension of jokes makes such a denial especially well placed to undermine both a hearer's evidence for an utterance having been sincere, and, separately, their belief that it was sincere—I call the latter ‘aesthetic gaslighting’. Se…

  • The ironic state

    Open Access•Zoe Walker•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2021•Cited by: 2

Britain is a nation that takes comedy seriously. For many, to be British is precisely to have a sense of humour of a certain kind, marked by irony and self-deprecation; and the British comedy industry is an extremely prosperous business, with great success both domestically and globally. Given the centrality of comedy to the national identity, then, we might wonder: what is the relationship between British comedy and Britain as a (global) politic…

  • A Governance Spectrum

Open Access•Ipswich Massachusetts USA QLF Atlantic Center for the Environment, A Mitchell…•ARTICLE•PARKS•2017

The size, scale and diversity of protected areas in Belize provide an informative case study of system management and governance that can offer a model for countries with expanding systems. The Belize National Protected Areas System is proportionately large for the size of the country, with terrestrial protected areas covering 36.6 per cent of the national territory and 19.8 per cent of the marine environment. The 108 sites in the National Protec…
