Recreation and Racial Politics in the Young Women's Christian Association of the United States, 1920s–1950s
Founded in the early twentieth century, the Young Women's Christian Association of the United States of America was one of the country's largest independent organizations for women. Unusually cross-class and multi-racial, the group's members, professional staff and volunteer officers frequently debated the YWCA's principles and programmes before mid-century, especially in relation to its segregated black centres. Shameless: The Visionary Life of Mary Gove Nichols (review)
Shameless is a dual biography of Mary Gove Nichols (1810-84) and her second husband, Thomas Low Nichols (1815-1901), two ardent (and controversial) health reformers in America during the mid-nineteenth century. In many respects, the Nicholses' beliefs and activities typified the antebellum popular health movement. Mary and Thomas advocated hydropathy, vegetarianism, dress reform, and personal responsibility in health and sickness. With unflagging…
Inner Hygiene: Constipation and the Pursuit of Health in Modern Society (review)
Inner Hygiene discusses the "culture of constipation" that emerged in England and the United States during the nineteenth century and continues to the present. Examples of fecal anxiety abound, as do ways of managing constipation. Television advertisements tout laxatives and bran cereals; nutrition tables on food packages list dietary fiber; health magazines carry testimonials about high colonics. While reading James C. Whorton's latest book, I r…

Physical Culture and the Body Beautiful: Purposive Exercise in the Lives of American Women, 1800-1870 (review)
"Purposive exercise," Jan Todd notes, differs from other physical activities, such as casual play or competitive sports: in purposive training, individuals apply highly structured methods to achieve "specific physiological and philosophical goals" (p. 3). American women--both past and present--have embraced purposive exercise, Todd argues, because of its "implicit promise of improved appearance, the quest for better health, and a desire to feel s…
