Endogenous knowledge and use value of Mesosphaerum suaveolens (L.) Kuntze, an invasive alien plant in Burkina Faso
Background: Mesosphaerum suaveolens (L.) Kuntze is an alien invasive plant species in many countries in tropical Africa, including Burkina Faso. This study aimed to document the indigenous knowledge of local people regarding the invasion of M. suaveolens, its uses, and the impact of its proliferation. Theorizing 'religion' in Canadian law
With primary reference to two Supreme Court rulings - Syndicat Northcrest v. Amselem ([2004] 2 SCR 551) and Ktunaxa Nation v. British Columbia (Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations) ([2017] 2 SCR 386) - the focal points of this study are twofold. In the first part, the authors analyse Amselem's definition of religion with reference to concepts and theories that have a well-entrenched place in the field of religious studies. They contend…
Testifying Bodies
In 2019, Margaret Atwood released The Testaments, the long-awaited sequel to her 1985 novel The Handmaid's Tale. Like the Christian Bible to which it makes frequent reference, the novel is assembled from multiple "testaments," each offering different articulations of the relationship between body, memory, and truth. Additionally, Atwood's Testaments foregrounds female bodies and female religious experiences, even as the novel borrows from and rep…
Exploring the Human and Animal Relationship in the Hebrew Bible Through the Blood Prohibition
This paper argues that the primary purpose of the blood prohibition in the Hebrew Bible is not to reflect ethical sensitivity toward animals; rather, it is part of an anthropocentric ideology that promotes both human ascendancy over, and kinship with, animals. The blood prohibition places a high value on animal life, but it does this to justify, and socially authorize, the eating of animals while simultaneously alleviating the deeply embedded hum…
Food for Thought
This paper reads Gil Anidjar’s Blood: A Critique of Christianity with the question of the animal in mind. The first section looks at the blood prohibition of the Hebrew Bible and Anidjar’s reading of the relevant biblical texts; the second section uses Acts 10 as an example of the New Testament’s view of eating and how this applies to the practice of the eucharist; the third, and final, section offers a reading of Freud’s Moses and Monotheism (in…
