Factors that contribute to strong working alliances between case managers and clients
Published literature has demonstrated that strong case manager–client working alliances foster improvement among clients. Reflecting a case-management context, this study explored how working alliances, as perceived by clients, are related to interpersonal capacities (or social support); intrapersonal dynamics; severity of problems facing client; and other client and case manager characteristics. The study included 101 clients and their 26 case m…

What SES may explain about work-related health limitations
While health’s relationship to SES is well established by research, relevant studies in the literature display little uniformity in their conceptualization of SES. The present study sought a temporal-ordered model reflecting longitudinal data and explaining work-related health limitations (health conditions that limit the amount or type of work an individual can perform) in the period 2008–2015. The data came from the 1997 cohort of the National …

Risk society online
While social construction of illness research has examined the redefinition of medically defined illness as non-illness by laypersons, nothing has considered this process alongside emerging infectious diseases (EIDs). Using Gidden's notion of modern risk society and distrust in expert authority, this paper examines how social media posts construct Zika virus as nonhazardous while displaying a distrust in research and prevention. Using qualitative…

We found that respondent risk perception and ac…

Black college students' drinking patterns
An alcohol‐use study of a sample of 160 college students was conducted at a predominantly black university in the Deep South in 1991. A model of personal control development was empirically tested. The results confirmed that students who take their first drink at a lower age are more likely to drink at a high level and to experience a high number of alcohol‐related problems in college. However, the negative relationship between age at the time of…
Alcohol and Other Drug Use Among African-American Students in a Southern University
This analysis of the circumstances of alcohol and other drug use among African-American students at a predominantly White university indicated that the majority of these students drank in a responsible manner.
