Does the framing of environmental ethics matter for the effectiveness of environmental education? Evidence from field experiments in elementary schools
The importance of environmental ethics is broadly acknowledged in environmental education. Nevertheless, little is known about whether differences in teachers' framing of ethical perspectives can lead to significant differences in outcomes. This study addresses this gap through field experiments evaluating the short-term impact of classes on local conservation issues among students and their parents in 21 public elementary schools in Kushiro, Jap…
Relative importance of lexical features in word processing during L2 English reading
Word processing during reading is known to be influenced by lexical features, especially word length, frequency, and predictability. This study examined the relative importance of these features in word processing during second language (L2) English reading. We used data from an eye-tracking corpus and applied a machine-learning approach to model word-level eye-tracking measures and identify key predictors. Predictors comprised several lexical fe…
Profiling English sentences based on Cefr levels
The study aims to demonstrate the procedure for constructing the CEFR-based Sentence Profile (CEFR-SP), a dataset with the CEFR levels assigned for sentences, and to identify the characteristics at each level. Basic statistics such as word length and sentence length are presented for each CEFR level for 7,511 carefully selected sentences, and statistical tests are conducted between adjacent levels to identify criterial features. The findings reve…
A frame-based approach to connectives
This study proposes an extended FrameNet approach for the description of connectives. The meanings of connectives are described with respect to the two frames evoked by each of the conjoined clauses, whose combinational patterns are termed “frame valences”. Taking the English polysemous connective while as an example, features of each meaning were statistically analyzed based on the frame valences using correspondence analysis. The correspondence…
