Private and public images: A study of photographic contrasts in postcard pictures of great basin Indians, 1898-1919
Drawing on John Berger's analytical distinction between the “private” and “public” photograph, this paper shows how the differing uses to which postcard pictures were put, and how the differing audiences which viewed them influenced the stereotypic as well as authentic ways in which Great Basin Indians were represented on the postcard from 1900 to 1920.
