Discussion of: “Dynamic Causal Effects in a Nonlinear World: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly”
The ease of estimating linear local projections has made them a popular tool for impulse response function analysis. Kolesár and Plagborg-Møller’s main goal is to inquire whether local projections (LP) estimands of impulse response functions have a causal interpretation when the data generating process (DGP) is nonlinear. This discussion focuses on two questions. First, how should we interpret the magnitude of the linear LP estimands in nonlinear…
Entheotopos. On a Heuristic Viewpoint Concerning Sacred Landscapes Creation in Ancient Egypt
The examination of funerary landscapes in ancient Egypt has traditionally encountered challenges in establishing comprehensive perspectives that could facilitate the formulation of theories explaining the paradigms governing the creation and evolution of these spaces. Indeed, in recent decades, with the advent of new methodological and epistemological approaches, certain foundational principles explaining the placement of necropolises, the organi…
Through the Face of the Dead: Constructing Totemic Identity in Early Neolithic Egypt and the Near East
This study examines the construction of individual and collective identity in pre-Neolithic Egypt and the Levant through the post mortem manipulation of human remains. Focusing on funerary rituals and skull reuse, interpreted using recent anthropological theory frameworks, we propose a totemic framework of ontological identity, in which clans associated with specific animals structured their ritual and spatial practices. Based on archaeological, …
Architectural Landscape. A New Interpretation of the Sloping Ceiling of Rekhmire’s Tomb Chapel (TT 100): Paisaje arquitectónico. Una nueva interpretación del techo ascendente de la tumba de Rekhmire (…
The tomb TT 100, belonging to the vizier Rekhmire, in the Theban necropolis (Luxor, Egypt), one of the best examples of funerary architecture of the Egyptian New Kingdom, has been widely studied since the beginning of the 20th century from the iconographic, historical and archaeological points of view. However, it has an anomalous structural feature for the classic Theban tomb typology of this period: a longitudinal corridor with a sloping ceilin…
Oil prices uncertainty, endogenous regime switching, and inflation anchoring
Using a novel approach to model regime switching with dynamic feedback and interactions, we extract latent mean and volatility factors in oil price changes. We illustrate how the volatility factor constitutes a useful measure of oil market risk (or oil price uncertainty) for policy makers and analysts as it captures uncertainty not reflected in other economic/financial uncertainty measures. Then, in the context of a VAR, we investigate the role o…
Dynamic Censored Regression and the Open Market Desk Reaction Function
The censored regression model and the Tobit model are standard tools in econometrics. This paper provides a formal asymptotic theory for dynamic time series censored regression when lags of the dependent variable have been included among the regressors. The central analytical challenge is to prove that the dynamic censored regression model satisfies stationarity and weak dependence properties if a condition on the lag polynomial holds. We show th…
The Decline in U.S. Output Volatility: Structural Changes and Inventory Investment
Explanations for the decline in U.S. output volatility since the mid-1980s include: “better policy,” “good luck,” and technological change. Our multiple-break estimates suggest that reductions in volatility since the mid-1980s extend not only to manufacturing inventories, but also to sales. This finding, along with a concentration of the reduction in the volatility of inventories in materials and supplies and the lack of a significant break in th…
