Self-Management and Relationships: Perspectives of Young Adults With Chronic Conditions and Their Peers
Because their disease is largely managed in the private environment, people with chronic conditions perform 'chronic homework.' The environment with which self-management is coordinated forms a kind of 'chronic care infrastructure' in dealing with the disease and, in the case of young adults with chronic conditions (YACCs), is essentially formed by peers. The article investigates how YACCs handle their illness in the context of their peer relatio…
The Sage Handbook of Qualitative Research Design
Sampling is somewhat underemphasized compared to how data are collected and analyzed in empirical qualitative research. Yet qualitative research in particular needs transparent and comprehensible procedures about how to select units of analysis. In this chapter, we will address this issue in three major steps. First, we will start with discussing some basic questions. Respecting the claim that social research has to yield results that go beyond a…

Mental Health and Integration: A Qualitative Study on the Struggles of Recently Arrived Refugees in Germany
Introduction: Forcibly displaced people are at particular risk of mental health problems and also face specific integration challenges upon resettlement. Existing literature suggests that there may be a bidirectional relationship between mental health and integration. The present study seeks to understand the relationship between integration processes and mental health problems or significant negative emotional experiences among adult refugees in…
A qualitative study on resilience in adult refugees in Germany
This study adds to a growing body of knowledge about resilience among adult refugees. It may support clinicians working with refugees by making them aware of specific manifestations of resilience and factors promoting positive adaptation specific to this client group. It also contributes to a more strengths-based view on refugee mental health and processes of integration

Übergänge Geflüchteter in Erwerbsarbeit.

Setback in labour market integration due to the Covid-19 crisis? An explorative insight on forced migrants’ vulnerability in Germany
In Germany as elsewhere, the Covid-19 pandemic has provoked a severe crisis for the economy, the labour market, social life and public administration. This article explores how refugees, who have accessed the labour market prior to the crisis, are affected by the current situation. Focusing on the crisis-shaken labour market as a juncture for integration processes, we were interested in whether the crisis actually increases vulnerability and lead…
Hearing and Being Heard, Seeing and Being Seen: Qualitative Inquiry in the Public Sphere-Introduction to the Special Issue
What means qualitative inquiry in the public sphere? What are public spheres for qualitative inquiry? First, to transgress the disciplinary boundaries of qualitative inquiry. Second, to identify research problems of societal relevance and target groups affected. Third, to make our results accessible for public audiences-how we write about our research and where we publish our findings. Fourth, to face changing political discourses with our resear…
Making It Relevant: Qualitative Inquiry in the Public Sphere Focusing End-of-Life Care and Migration
Qualitative inquiry in the public sphere is discussed with a study concerning intercultural palliative care. For the case of Russian-speaking immigrants in Germany, language problems in care are analyzed as an issue of organizational ethics. Interviews with this target group originally addressing barriers of access to professional care are reanalyzed for the roles of language, limited language skills, and the lack of professional translation in c…
Refugees' Labor Market Integration in the Context of a Polarized Public Discourse
The public discourse on the integration of refugees into the German society and the labor market in Germany in particular is polarized. How does the transition of refugees to work can be made possible and how does it currently take place? There is little evidence, how refugees can be successfully placed on the labor market. Exemplary qualitative case studies are presented that address processes and mechanisms which facilitate or hinder effective …

Walking and Talking Integration: Triangulation of Data From Interviews and Go-Alongs for Exploring Immigrant Welfare Recipients' Sense(s) of Belonging
Integration of immigrants is a major political and societal topic in societies such as Germany, although there are different ideas about when integration is achieved. For analyzing integration from the immigrants' points of view, data triangulation of talking (episodic interviews addressing migration histories) and walking (mobile methods-go-alongs) reveals several levels of integration experiences. After outlining space and belonging as relevant…
Cultural and Individual Barriers to Palliative Care From Different Angles: Data Triangulation in Practice
When a disease turns terminal, end-of-life care replaces questions of cure and healing. Patients and relatives face the transition from health care to end-of-life care and the decision for a type of care (family, hospital, hospice). When people with a specific cultural background tend not to use available institutional support, the question of barriers and their location should be raised. In a study, patients, relatives, and service providers wer…
The Concepts of Qualitative Data: Challenges in Neoliberal Times for Qualitative Inquiry
Qualitative inquiry always used various kinds of data for understanding social issues and participants' perspectives. Research and methodologies were debated for what data are adequate for studying social justice issues. Current challenges for concepts of data are new, for example, virtual and digital data, question traditional data (interviews, ethnography, etc.) in their relevance for understanding current life worlds. New methods produce new a…

Mantras and Myths: The Disenchantment of Mixed-Methods Research and Revisiting Triangulation as a Perspective
Critiques about the development in mixed-methods research (MMR) by some of its protagonists mention the following: ignorance of earlier developments, too much focus on designs rather than issues, more a metaphor than a mode of research, the belief in paradigms, and too much focus on methods instead of theoretical and methodological issues. Myths and mantras in the MMR literature are discussed here. For overcoming the limitations of MMR becoming e…
Qualitative Inquiries into Social Representations of Health
Concepts of health and illness have been a major topic for social representations research. Whereas studies on cognitive representations of health and illness develop a general, decontextualized schema of illness, social representations research focuses on the diversity of lay concepts of health and illness and how health and illness are socially constructed in different contexts. Two qualitative studies about the social representations of health…

Migrating Diseases: Triangulating Approaches-Applying Qualitative Inquiry as a Global Endeavor
Understanding qualitative inquiry as a global endeavor and using it in a globalizing context leads to several challenges. Differences in concepts of what qualitative research is may become visible. Methods like interviews may have a different connotation in other cultures, where our interviewees come from. We may have to conduct and analyze interviews differently. These challenges are discussed here on the background of an ongoing project focused…

Challenges for Qualitative Inquiry as a Global Endeavor: Introduction to the Special Issue
Understanding qualitative inquiry as a global endeavor leads to several challenges. First, we still live in different worlds of qualitative research-There are local traditions with limited exchanges. This has to do not only with language barriers but also with political and scientific contexts, in which research is embedded. These differences complicate the globalization of qualitative inquiry. Second, research issues become increasingly globaliz…

Challenges for a New Critical Qualitative Inquiry: Introduction to the Special Issue
Discussions around constructing a new critical qualitative inquiry need to reflect challenges on three levels: (a) Inquiry can be critical about the issues under study-a social or political problem to be addressed in a critical perspective; (b) critical approaches to methods and approaches in current research-other forms (e.g., quantitative research) or parts of the mainstream of qualitative research; and (c) a major challenge is to remain able t…
Migration, Unemployment, and Lifeworld: Challenges for a New Critical Qualitative Inquiry in Migration
Migration is an issue for many countries. It affects several areas of social problems, for example, work and unemployment. A relevant issue to study in the context of unemployment and social welfare is, "Which are experiences of migrants with different language backgrounds in finding work and support?" For a running study with episodic interviews and mobile methods with migrants from the former Soviet Union to Germany, several issues are discusse…
Social Representations of Health Held by Health Professionals: The Case of General Practitioners and Home-care Nurses
To date, social representations research in the field of health and illness has focused mainly on lay representations of health. In the context of the "New Public Health", the more general concept of health (instead of the more reduced concept of curing illness) has become a major target for professional work. From this trend, the following research questions can be drawn: do health professionals hold a concept of health? If so, what is the major…

How do homeless adolescents think of health and perceive their own health status? Episodic interviews with ( N = 24) homeless adolescents (age 14-20 years) in Germany addressed several aspects of the adolescents' representations of health: their definitions and experiences of health and links between both. Results show the meaning of health for participants in street life. Patterns of perceiving the relevance of health and of possible influences …
Homelessness and Health: Challenges for Health Psychology

Health and Ageing -Challenges for Health Psychology Research
In the light of ageing populations, three general issues of health and ageing become relevant for research and intervention in health psychology: ageing in the general population, among those who are confronted with frailty and illness, and on the ageing experiences of specific populations. In all of these areas there is a need to understand the factors (such as social engagement) that promote well-being and compression of ageing in community or …

Lüders 2000a: 384) — zumindest was die methodische Diskussion angeht. Schon für die Teilnehmende Beobachtung hat Denzin (1989: 157–158) die Triangulation verschiedener Methoden als Charakteristikum festgehalten: Participant observation will be defined as a field strategy that simultaneously co…
