Antarctic conservation policies and practices: Towards a more inclusive and sustainable future
Contemporary archaeology brings a unique perspective from which to critically think about Antarctic Treaty System conservation policies and practices concerning material things. The paper begins by highlighting how they have relied on several underlying assumptions, which we summarise as the 'wilderness' and 'heritage' principles. It then discusses how these policies and practices have often led to non-sustainable or non-inclusive outcomes. In pa…
Bridging Conceptual Divides Between Colonial and Modern Worlds: Insular Narratives and the Archaeologies of Modern Spanish Colonialism
Narratives embedded in studies of modern Spanish colonialism have conspired against a deep understanding of colonialism as a global and current issue and have influenced or limited the directions for research. By focusing on particular narratives that separate and disconnect the realities of the colonies from those of the Iberian Peninsula, this article discusses the conceptual divide between the study of colonial and early modern realms, and the…

Archaeologies in Antarctica from Nostalgia to Capitalism: A Review
Assessing tourism patterns in the South Shetland Islands for the conservation of 19th-century archaeological sites in Antarctica
Although archaeological studies focusing on 19th-century sealing have been performed over the past 30 years, its history and sites have traditionally had low visibility in Antarctic narratives and the Antarctic Treaty System policymaking on heritage. Researchers face the challenge of increasing the visibility of sealers’ history and public awareness of the importance of conserving the oldest sites of Antarctica. In this paper, we propose that ide…

Modernity at the Edges of the Spanish Enlightenment. Novelty and Material Culture in Floridablanca Colony (Patagonia, Eighteenth Century)
Introduction: Disrupting the Grand Narrative of Spanish and Portuguese Colonialism
Archaeology of Culture Contact and Colonialism in Spanish and Portuguese America
Archaeology of Culture Contact and Colonialism in Spanish and Portuguese America contributes to disrupt the old grand narrative of cultural contact and colonialism in Spanish and Portuguese America in a wide and complete sense. This edited volume aims at exploring contact archaeology in the modern era. Archaeology has been exploring the interaction of peoples and cultures from early times, but only in the last few decades have cultural contact an…
In this paper we discuss some of the ways in which certain areas of the Antarctic continent intended to be transformed into a series of ‘places’ not only known but also dominated by the modern world. With that aim in mind, we consider the materiality of the cultural landscape, making reference to the multiple practices that could have shaped it. We focus our attention on the first human settlements on the South Shetland Islands, which were establ…
Dentro deste marco, a segunda parte pr…
Conserving the oldest historic sites in the Antarctic: The challenges in managing the sealing sites in the South Shetland Islands
The fur seal population of the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica, was intensively hunted by sealers from the discovery of the islands in 1819 to the early 1820s, by which time the seal numbers were so depleted that sealing became uneconomic. Sealing was revived for both fur seals and elephant seals at several periods later in the century. Sealers were put ashore in gangs and built makeshift shelters in which to live, and also occupied caves. Man…
To Project an Order: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Spatial Construction in the Spanish Colony of Floridablanca (Patagonia, Eighteenth Century)

Details are provided of a sledge, possibly of late nineteenth/early twentieth century provenance, discovered on Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, in 2007

Archaeology in Antarctica: Nineteenth-Century Capitalism Expansion Strategies
Geophysical prospection at Floridablanca archaeological site, San Julian Bay, Argentina
We present the application of three geophysical methods—ground‐penetrating radar, resistivity and electromagnetic induction—to the Floridablanca archaeological site at San Julián Bay, Argentina. The objective of the prospection was to detect buried archaeological structures—mostly adobe walls—to delimit these structures, to find their characteristics and to study the presence of tiles attributable to roof collapse within the zone of interest. Pro…
