Social workers’ contribution to success in lives of young Moroccan-Dutch
In two studies we investigated the views of Dutch social professionals and young Moroccan-Dutch on success and failure factors in the social participation of the latter group in the Netherlands. In the first study, professionals (N = 148) emphasized ties and life skills. In the second study, we compared perspectives on participation via interviews with Moroccan-Dutch (N = 61), aged 18–34 years, and Dutch social workers (N = 45), aged 20–64 years.…
The Historical and Social-Cultural Context of Acculturation of Moroccan-Dutch
Moroccan laborers and their families started migrating to the Netherlands from the 1960s. We used research findings on migration and acculturation to examine the historical and social-cultural context of Moroccan-Dutch. Dutch administration at national, regional, and local level had no integration policy upon their arrival. Later, when many Moroccan-Dutch stayed longer in the Netherlands than anticipated, the Dutch administration favored a multic…
Identity as a key factor in the acculturation of young Moroccan-Dutch adults
Many young Moroccan-Dutch in transition within the Dutch society face acculturation challenges and have limited social resources. We examined how different access to social capital (supportive networks among family, friends, and neighbourhood) and social identity of Moroccan-Dutch students (N = 172) aged 17 to 33 years are associated with their acculturation outcomes. A path analysis showed that those with a stronger Moroccan-Islamic identity had…
Young Moroccan-Dutch
We examined to what extent Moroccan-Dutch (N = 25) between 15 and 32 years of age are oriented towards the Dutch and Moroccan community when describing their identities. We used the Twenty Statements Test (developed by Kuhn and McPartland (1954). See, M. H. Kuhn and T. S. McPartland, "An Empirical Investigation of Self-attitudes", American Sociological Review, Vol. 19, No. 1, 1954, p. 69. In this study, participants were asked to complete the sen…
Migrants, Partner Selection and Integration
INTRODUCTIONEvery year thousands of newly wed Turks and Moroccans migrate to the Netherlands to live with their partner. It is rather unexpected that marriage migration takes place at such a rate. Migration was thought to finish off slowly after the phase of family reunification. Instead, many descendants of the first generation decided to marry a partner still living in the country of origin, resulting in a new migration. The first Turkish and Mo…
