  • Individual-Level Causes of Death in Portugal, 1834–1910. Their Potential and Pitfalls for Studying Health Inequalities

Open Access•Paulo Teodoro Matos, Diogo Paiva•ARTICLE•Historical Life Course Studies•2026

This paper assesses the potential of Portugal's individual-level death certificates with stated causes of death by a physician (1834–1910), arguing that, despite assumptions of documentary scarcity, significant collections survive and can support the study of mortality and health inequalities. It outlines the historical trajectory of death registration with emphasis on liberal reforms initiated in 1837 which introduced physician-certified death c…

  • A Estatística da População na América Portuguesa, 1750-1820

    Open Access•Paulo Silveira E Sousa, Paulo Teodoro Matos•ARTICLE•Memorias•2022•References: 2

  • Remarriage and Stepfamilies in the ‘Western Islands’ of Europe: The rural Azores of Portugal in the 18th and 19th centuries

Paulo Teodoro Matos, Diogo Paiva•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This article uses parish registers, libri status animarum, and notarial records from the 18th and 19th centuries to assess the extent to which the rates of remarriage of widows and widowers in the Azores were similar to those of mainland Portugal. We consider that, despite the clear obstacles to marriage on the islands (due especially to male emigration) remarriage was in fact frequent and created stepfamilies. Factors such as social tolerance, s…

  • The Demography of Slavery in the Coffee Districts of Angola, c. 1800–70

Open Access•Jelmer Vos, Paulo Teodoro Matos•ARTICLE•The Journal of African History•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 21

This article uses demographic data from nineteenth-century Angola to evaluate, within a West Central African setting, the widely accepted theory that sub-Saharan Africa's integration within the Atlantic world through slave and commodity trading caused significant transformations in slavery in the subcontinent. It specifically questions, first, whether slaveholding became more dominant in Angola during the last phase of the transatlantic slave tra…

  • Early Portuguese Data for Wage Developments in India: Kannur (Cananor), 1516-1517

    Open Access•Paulo Teodoro Matos, Jan Lucassen•ARTICLE•Ler História•2019•References: 4

This essay discusses new evidence for wage developments in Western India from c. 1300 to 1600. By introducing wage and price data for Kannur (Cananor in Portuguese and British sources) for the years 1516-1517 we contribute to a larger discussion about standards of living in South Asia. These figures from unpublished Portuguese archival sources are compared to Indian ones for the early fourteenth and late sixteenth centuries (no other being availa…

  • To stay or to migrate: Siblings and life transitions in 19th century Ribeira Seca, Azores

Diogo Paiva, Paulo Teodoro Matos et al.•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2018•Cited by: 4

Although in Europe research into the life course of siblings began several decades ago, historical demography research in Portugal has lagged behind in this particular subject. The following paper is a first step towards better understanding the influence of sibling ties in 19th century Azores, through the analysis of a sample taken from the Ribeira Seca parish on the island of São Jorge. The sample corresponds to a selection of siblings born bet…

  • Counting Portuguese colonial populations, 1776–1875: A research note

Paulo Teodoro Matos•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 10

In 1776 the Portuguese Crown decreed that statistical population tables were to be compiled in all its overseas possessions. Using a defined model, each governor was to send annually a population count for the area under his jurisdiction. In the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU) in Lisbon there are over a thousand statistical population tables from Brazil to Macau. This documentary corpus opens up important horizons for demographic, social and …
